How can I show that good character is more praise-worthy than talent?

Parenting Perspective

In a world that often celebrates fleeting performance, the foundation of a spiritually grounded home lies in the truth that good character is the highest form of success. Showing this to a child requires gently redirecting their admiration from what they can do to who they are becoming

Praise Values Before Victories

When a child achieves something impressive, intentionally begin by recognising the qualities and virtues that enabled the success, not just the final result.

  • Elevate Integrity: Instead of saying, ‘You drew so beautifully,’ say, ‘I loved your patience while finishing that drawing.’ When they help someone, let your joy shine more brightly than when they win a race: ‘Your kindness made someone’s day, and that pleases Allah Almighty.’
  • The Lesson: This teaches the child that praise is reserved not just for talent, but for the character behind it. This builds a moral language stronger than applause, encouraging them to seek inner excellence.

Make Moral Moments Visible

Parents often praise school grades publicly but discuss good deeds privately. You must reverse this pattern to show where true value lies.

  • Public Warmth for Virtue: Ensure that moments of good character receive visible warmth and attention. Say aloud, ‘I noticed how gently you spoke to your sibling,’ or ‘You told the truth even though it was difficult; that takes immense courage.’
  • Tone as Hierarchy: When other children are present, your tone can teach a subtle hierarchy: that manners outshine medals. This helps your child internalise that the heart’s goodness is what truly earns admiration.

Use Stories to Build Reverence for Character

Stories are essential for shaping a child’s moral imagination, showing that moral strength has a greater impact than material skill.

  • Prophetic Examples: Share stories like Prophet Yusuf (peace be upon him) forgiving his brothers, or the Prophet Muhammad `ﷺ` helping an old woman who insulted him. These demonstrate that true greatness is moral, not material
  • Personal Connection: Recount times when someone’s kindness helped you more than someone’s intelligence. This links admiration directly to integrity.

Model Praise Restraint for Worldly Wins

When your child performs well, celebrate, but with measured joy. Your enthusiasm for moral strength should always visibly exceed your excitement for talent.

  • Redefining Success: To rebalance this, make a conscious effort to say: ‘Your effort pleased me, but your respect towards others makes me proud of who you are.’ This gently redefines success in their hearts.

Connect Character to Divine Love

Make it known that good character is not merely socially admired but spiritually rewarded

  • Sacred Virtue: Say, ‘When you share, Allah Almighty loves that,’ or ‘Your honesty is a light that Allah blesses.’ Linking moral beauty to divine closeness makes the pursuit of goodness sacred, not situational.
  • Family Rhythm: End the day by naming one good trait you saw in your child. This turns character recognition into a consistent family rhythm.

Spiritual Insight

Good character is not mere decoration; it is faith in motion. Islam teaches that moral beauty weighs heavier than worldly achievement.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran in Surah Al Qalam (68), Verse 4:

And indeed, you (O Prophet Muhammad ) innately possess characteristics that are the greatest (example).

This verse, revealed about the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, affirms that his greatness was rooted in the nobility of his character. It reminds us that the truest excellence is moral refinement, not external performance.

It is recorded in Riyad As Salihin, Hadith 625, that the holy Prophet Muhammad `ﷺ` said:

‘There is nothing heavier on the believer’s scale on the Day of Judgement than good character.’

This Hadith offers a timeless truth: skills may fade, but character endures. When parents anchor praise in this reality, they raise children who value sincerity above spectacle, believing that true excellence is being sincere, patient, and kind for the sake of Allah Almighty.
