How can I help my child understand that every language is a blessing from Allah Almighty?
Parenting Perspective
Children often see language just as words to memorise, not realising the deeper value behind them. To help your child see every language as a gift, talk about how each new word opens doors to understanding people, stories, and cultures. Use simple daily moments to show how languages connect hearts, for example, reading a bedtime story in your home language or greeting a family member in another tongue. Explain that learning more than one language helps them speak kindly to different people. Let your child hear you say Alhamdulillah for their speech, even if it is not perfect yet. If they ever feel shy or complain that it is too hard, remind them that Allah Almighty has given them a special ability that some people do not have. Celebrate small victories together, a new word spoken, a song remembered, or a Dua recited in Arabic. When you make language learning part of family gratitude, your child begins to see words as a trust and a bridge for love and connection, not just a school task.
Spiritual Insight
Islam teaches us that our tongues, words, and different languages are among the many signs of Allah Almighty’s wisdom. Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Rome (30), Verse 22: ‘And amongst His Signs (of the infinite truth) are that He (Allah Almighty) created the layers of trans-universal existence and the Earth; and (designed) diversity of your languages and your (skin) colours; indeed, in this there are (logical and rational) Signs for those who are imbued with knowledge.’ This verse reminds us that speaking more than one language is not a burden but a sign of His creative power.
It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith 2512, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated: ‘Whoever does not thank people has not thanked Allah.’ This Hadith Shareef shows us that gratitude should cover every blessing, including the ability to speak. When you tell your child that every language is a gift, you teach them to guard their speech with care, share good words, and value the people they can reach through those words. Make Dua that Allah Almighty blesses their tongue and helps them use language to spread kindness, truth, and praise for Him. This small but sincere reminder plants in their heart a sense that learning languages is not just clever, it is a sign of faith and a form of Shukr, InshaAllah.
