How can I frame small delays as part of Allah’s perfect plan?

Parenting Perspective

Children grow at their own pace, and sometimes parents feel anxious when certain skills take longer to emerge. Whether a child speaks later, takes longer to read, or struggles with coordination, it is natural for parents to worry, especially when comparisons with peers arise. However, the way parents communicate about these delays fundamentally shapes the way children view themselves.

Normalising Unique Timings

To protect a child’s self-esteem, it is essential to frame delays not as shortcomings, but as unique timings within Allah’s wisdom. Instead of saying, ‘Why are you still not doing this?’, reframe with comfort and reassurance: ‘Every child grows in their own time, and you are doing beautifully in other ways.’ This reassures your child that they are not behind, but on a path perfectly suited to them.

Highlighting Alternative Strengths

It is valuable to highlight other strengths when one area takes time. If a child is slow in speech but highly creative in play, draw attention to that creativity: ‘I love the stories you create with your toys; that shows how imaginative you are.’ This helps your child feel valued for who they are rather than defined by a single delay.

Cultivating Patience in the Process

Another approach is to teach children that patience is part of learning. When a milestone feels far away, encourage them to take small steps with calmness. You might say: ‘Sometimes new things take a little longer, but every step you make is important.’ This shifts the focus from waiting anxiously for the end result to appreciating the journey itself. Parents must also model resilience and trust; when you hold a sense of calm faith, you communicate security, which protects your child’s confidence.

Spiritual Insight

Islam teaches that Allah Almighty has created everything with perfect measure and timing. Every stage of growth unfolds according to His decree. When parents understand this, they can frame delays not as obstacles but as part of Allah’s flawless plan.

Everything is Created with Predestination

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Qamar (54), Verses 49:

‘Indeed, all things We created with predestination…’

This verse reminds us that nothing in our lives is random. A delay in learning or growth is not a mistake, but part of Allah’s carefully designed plan. Parents can teach children that just as the sun rises at its appointed time, every new skill arrives when Allah wills it. After reflecting on this verse, families can discuss how delays are not signs of failure, but signs of Allah’s perfect timing.

The Goodness in All Affairs

It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2999, that the Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘How wonderful is the affair of the believer, for his affairs are all good. If something pleasing befalls him, he thanks Allah and that is good for him; if something harmful befalls him, he is patient and that is good for him.’

This Hadith beautifully shows that every situation, whether ease or delay, carries benefit when met with gratitude or patience. Parents can share this with children in simple words: ‘When things come quickly, we say Alhamdulillah. When things take longer, we say Alhamdulillah too, because Allah knows what is best for us.’

By grounding the experience of delays in these teachings, parents give their children a spiritual anchor. Instead of feeling left behind, the child learns to see their journey as uniquely blessed. This nurtures contentment, patience, and a deep trust in Allah that will serve them throughout life.
