How can I balance screen learning with real-life talk?

Parenting Perspective

Real Conversation is Key

Screens can offer helpful learning tools, but they should never replace the rich conversations that build a child’s language, thinking, and trust. Parents often feel that screens are educational enough on their own, yet research shows that children learn best when they speak, listen, and share with real people.

If your child uses a language app or watches a show, sit nearby and talk about what they see. Pause to ask open-ended questions like, ‘What happened next?’ or ‘Can you say that word too?’ When screen time ends, weave the new words into your daily life. If your child learns the word ‘apple’ from a video, talk about apples at snack time or in the shop.

Keep screens as a small supplement to the real conversations you share at the dinner table, during bedtime stories, or on walks outside. Be mindful that background noise from screens can drown out your child’s own voice. Protect quiet moments so your child feels safe to ask questions and share their ideas. The most powerful lessons happen not on the screen but in the gentle back-and-forth of everyday family talk.

Spiritual Insight

The Art of Expression

In Islam, words are gifts that strengthen our ties with each other and with Allah Almighty. He has given us the blessing of speech so we can teach, guide, and connect hearts. Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Rahman (55), Verse 4:

‘Taught him the art of expression.’

This verse reminds us that the ability to communicate is a divine trust, not to be taken lightly or replaced by silent screens.

A Sacred Responsibility

It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith 1705, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated:

‘Every one of you is a shepherd and every one of you is responsible for his flock.’

This Hadith Shareef emphasises our duty to be present, guiding our children’s minds and hearts. Balancing screens with real-life talk is part of this sacred responsibility. When you speak with your child warmly and listen with patience, you honour the gift of speech and build trust. Even small moments, sharing a story, making Dua together, talking about Allah Almighty’s signs in nature, plant seeds that screens can never replace. Let technology serve your family, not silence it.
