How can I balance Islamic words with everyday speech?
Parenting Perspective
Blend, Do Not Separate
For many parents, finding the right balance between Islamic phrases and everyday language can feel a little confusing at first. You want your child to feel comfortable saying words like Bismillah, Alhamdulillah, or Insha Allah, but you also want them to speak naturally in daily conversations. The good news is that you do not have to separate the two; they can blend beautifully when you use them in real, meaningful moments.
For example, you can say Bismillah before eating or starting homework, Alhamdulillah when something good happens, and Insha Allah when talking about future. Repeat these words calmly and naturally so they become part of your child’s routine, not just a lesson. Use simple explanations so they know what each word means. Encourage your child to use them with you but avoid forcing them; they will follow your example when they see you saying these words with sincerity. By keeping the tone warm and relaxed, you show your child that faith-based words are not separate from daily speech but are a gentle way to remember Allah Almighty in everyday life.
Spiritual Insight
Remembrance in Simplest Actions
In Islam, the best words are those that remind us of Allah Almighty while guiding our hearts towards gratitude, patience, and hope. Our faith encourages us to remember Allah Almighty often, weaving His remembrance into the simplest of actions. Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Ahzaab (33), Verse 41:
‘Those of you who are believers, remember (by engaging in the remembrance of) Allah (Almighty); with such intensity of remembrance (so that it is absorbed into every aspect of your worldly life).’
These daily phrases, though small, help your child to see that Allah Almighty is near in every part of their life.
Keep Your Tongue Moist
The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ showed this balance in his daily speech, gently guiding his companions and family to remember Allah Almighty through simple words used naturally in conversation. It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith 3375, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated:
‘Keep your tongue moist with the remembrance of Allah.’
Teaching your child phrases like Bismillah, Alhamdulillah, and Insha Allah is one way to keep their tongue and heart connected to their faith. Do not worry if they sometimes forget; remind them with kindness, not scolding. Over time, your child will learn that these blessed words bring comfort, blessings, and a sense of belonging to the Ummah.
