How can a student handle the fear that OCD worsens at university?

Parenting Perspective

The transition to university life represents a significant shift in routine and environment which can trigger fears about mental well-being. A student might worry that the lack of parental supervision or the increase in academic pressure will cause their symptoms to become more intense. It is extremely important to acknowledge that this feeling is a natural response to a major life change. You should validate their concern with empathy while providing a new framework for their independence. The role of a loving parent is to help the student see that they carry their coping tools with them to any new location. They need to know that their personal worth is not tied to the frequency of their thoughts. This grounded approach helps them stay calm as they prepare for this exciting new stage of their journey.

Building a Portable Safety Net

You can assist by teaching the student specific phrases to use when they feel a wave of anxiety about the future. Suggest an internal script like, ‘The setting is new, but I am the same capable person who has managed challenges before.’ This helps the student refocus on their internal resilience rather than the external environment. It is also helpful to establish a predictable communication routine with home to provide a sense of continuity. Encourage them to identify local support systems and quiet spaces on campus before they arrive. Reassure them that while the location has changed, your care for them remains a constant force in their life. Consistent validation of their feelings is the most effective way to ease distress. They need to know that their safety is always a very high priority in our household even when they are away.

Spiritual Insight

Beyond strategies, there lies the deeper nourishment that faith offers during times of significant change. The noble Quran and Hadith remind us that every new path is overseen by Divine wisdom and protection. Faith is the ultimate shield against the fear of the unknown and the pressure of a new environment.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 286:

Allah Almighty does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear’

This reminds us that the challenges a student faces are within their capacity to manage with the help of the Creator. It encourages them to trust that they have the strength to navigate university life without failing. By reflecting on this Verse, a student can see that they are never given more than they can handle. It shifts the perspective from a fear of being overwhelmed toward a calm reliance on Divine support.

It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2664, that Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

A strong believer is better and is more lovable to Allah Almighty than a weak believer’

This teaches us that mental and physical strength are virtues that we should strive for through trust in Allah Almighty. For a student, this means that their efforts to manage their health are a form of worship that is beloved to the Creator. Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ always encouraged us to seek wellness and to have a heart full of trust in the Sustainer. When a student learns that their journey is overseen by the Best of Guides, they can let go of the anxiety and find true contentment in their new environment.

Supporting a student through these feelings requires consistent validation and spiritual grounding. By providing clear guidance and a sense of Divine protection, you help them build a resilient heart. This balanced approach ensures they do not feel alone. As they grow, they will learn that their needs are not an obstacle but a part of their unique journey. Ultimately, your patient guidance helps them realise that peace is found in accepting oneself as a cherished unique creation of Allah Almighty. This is the steady path to peace and security for every student in our shared world.
