How can a parent support a child fearing that ‘liking’ a post causes catastrophe?

Parenting Perspective

Supporting a child who fears that ‘liking’ a post will cause a catastrophe requires deep patience and empathy. This anxiety is often linked to magical thinking, where a child believes minor actions can influence global events. By providing a steady presence, parents help their child navigate these feelings without judgment. Validation is the first step toward building the trust necessary to dismantle these distressing cycles of thought. Parents can guide their child toward a more balanced perspective through consistent and calm interaction.

De-escalating the Fear of Consequence

When a child is stuck in fear, it is vital to acknowledge the intensity of their feeling while challenging the logic of the threat. A parent can say they understand how real the fear feels, but the internet cannot change reality. By separating the emotional experience from the physical world, the child sees that a ‘like’ is just a data point on a server. This grounding technique allows the child to lower their guard and engage with technology in a more relaxed manner. Parents should remain a calm anchor for the child during moments of peak distress to ensure they feel fully supported. It is helpful to remind the child they are safe and that digital choices do not control the safety of others.

Focusing on Real World Stability

Shifting focus from the digital screen to real-world stability provides a necessary sense of balance. Engaging in physical activities that do not involve a device helps ground the child in the present moment. Parents should model healthy phone habits by showing they do not let digital interactions dictate their emotional state. Discussing how it feels to let a post go by without interacting with it is a helpful exercise. When a child manages to ignore a compulsion, parents should offer calm and steady praise. This helps the child realise their value is found in their character and real-world relationships. Consistent support and open communication remain the most effective tools for helping a child grow into a grounded user.

Spiritual Insight

Beyond strategies and conversations, faith offers deeper nourishment for the heart. Noble Quran and traditions of holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ remind us that raising children is about nurturing hearts that remember Allah Almighty. While technology can create loops of anxiety, faith provides a foundation for the soul to find peace and freedom.

Allah Almighty states in noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 286:

‘Allah Almighty does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear…’

This reminds us that the internal struggles we face are within our capacity to overcome when we seek help.

It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 6491, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘There is no disease that Allah Almighty has created, except that He also has created its treatment.’

This teaches us that every hardship or anxiety has a path toward healing and that we must remain hopeful.

Helping a child navigate deep fears requires consistent guidance. By providing practical tools and a spiritual framework, parents ensure their children remain grounded and peaceful. Focus remains on building resilience and helping the child understand that their value is found in their character. Through open communication and steady support, we help our children navigate the digital world with a sense of self rooted in their faith and their values.
