Parenting Perspective
When a Madrassah teacher sees a child repeating a verse ten times, they often mistake this behavior for a lack of focus or a refusal to progress. You should explain that your child is actually experiencing a very high level of anxiety where their brain tells them the words were not pronounced perfectly. This is a medical condition called OCD and it turns the beautiful act of recitation into a source of intense stress and pressure. By helping the teacher understand that the child is not being defiant, you create a path for compassion rather than punishment in the classroom.
A practical way to communicate this is by using the analogy of a stuck record or a skipping disc that needs a gentle nudge to continue. You can explain that punishing the child for these repetitions only increases their anxiety which in turn makes the need to repeat even stronger and more frequent. Suggest a strategy where the teacher encourages the child to move to the next verse even if it feels ‘wrong’ to the child at that moment. This collaborative approach allows the child to feel supported and safe in their learning environment rather than fearful of making a tiny mistake.
Spiritual Insight
Beyond the educational setting, faith offers a framework of mercy that should be the foundation of all learning especially for those who struggle with doubt. Noble Quran reminds us that the words of Allah Almighty are a source of healing and should never be used as a tool for causing psychological distress.
Allah Almighty states in Noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 185:
‘Allah Almighty intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship.’
This verse serves as a reminder to both parents and teachers that the goal of religion is to bring a person closer to their Creator through a manageable and loving path. It encourages the teacher to see the child’s struggle as a test of patience for the educator as much as it is for the student. When the classroom environment prioritizes the spirit of the law over the rigid mechanical perfection of every letter, the child’s heart can finally find the tranquility that Noble Quran is meant to provide.
It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 39, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated:
‘Indeed, the religion is easy, and no one will ever be overly harsh in religion except that it will overcome him. So follow a middle course and do the best you can.’
This teaches us that being overly strict or demanding a perfection that causes suffering is contrary to the prophetic way of teaching. Supporting a child in a religious setting requires a balance of firm encouragement and deep empathy for their internal hurdles. By helping the teacher stay connected to the truth that Allah Almighty values the effort more than the error, you empower your child to continue their studies with joy. Your love provides the stability they need to navigate these academic challenges with grace. Helping your child find balance is a beautiful way to show love today.
