How can I connect my child’s love for Allah Almighty with their love for His Messenger ﷺ?

Parenting Perspective

Guiding a child to love both Allah Almighty and His Messenger ﷺ is one of the most beautiful duties of a parent. The key is to present this love not as two separate affections, but as a single, interconnected bond. Love for the Prophet ﷺ should always be framed as a natural and essential outcome of one’s love for Allah. By explaining this relationship with gentleness and consistency, we can help our children build a faith that is both deeply reverent and warmly personal.

Explaining the Divine Connection

To make this concept clear, use simple and relatable analogies. You can explain that Allah Almighty is the King, and the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is His most trusted and beloved messenger who brought us the King’s message of love and guidance.

We can say to our children, ‘Allah loves us so much that He did not leave us alone. He sent us the very best person, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, to show us how to live, how to be kind, and how to find our way back to Him.’ This narrative helps a child understand that following the Prophet ﷺ is not a separate set of rules, but the practical way of showing our love for Allah. It answers the question, ‘How do I love Allah?’ with a clear answer: ‘By following the one Allah sent to us’.

Linking Daily Actions to This Dual Love

Integrate this principle into everyday life by connecting your child’s good deeds to both Allah and His Messenger ﷺ. This creates a powerful and constant reinforcement of the link between them.

When you see your child sharing, being honest, or speaking gently, praise them with this dual connection. For example, you could say, ‘That was so kind of you. Allah loves it when we are kind, and that is exactly what our Prophet ﷺ taught us to do.’ This simple phrase accomplishes two things: it affirms that the action pleases Allah, and it simultaneously honours the Prophet ﷺ as the teacher of that good action. Over time, this helps a child see obedience not as a burden, but as a joyful expression of love for both the Creator and His final Messenger.

Spiritual Insight

The relationship between loving Allah and loving His Messenger ﷺ is the very essence of the Islamic faith. It is a theological principle where one cannot exist without the other. The Quran establishes that the practical, tangible proof of one’s love for Allah is their adherence to the path of His Prophet ﷺ.

This love is not just an emotional sentiment; it is a condition for the completion of faith (iman). It requires prioritising the Prophet’s ﷺ teachings over one’s own desires, opinions, and even cultural norms.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Imran (3), Verse 31:

‘Say, [O Muhammad], ‘If you should love Allah, then follow me, [so] Allah will love you and forgive you your sins. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful…’’

This verse is often called the ‘verse of the test’ (ayat al-mihnah), as it provides the clear criterion for anyone who claims to love Allah. It establishes an undeniable spiritual equation: true love for Allah necessitates following the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. The verse then reveals the extraordinary reward for this obedience: not only will Allah grant His forgiveness, but He will grant His own love in return. Following the Prophet ﷺ thus becomes the bridge that connects our human love for God to God’s divine love for us.

It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 67, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘None of you truly believes until I am more beloved to him than his father, his child, and all mankind’.

This powerful Hadith clarifies the depth of love required. It is not a casual or secondary affection but a love that must outweigh all other worldly attachments. This does not mean abandoning familial love, but rather that in any instance of conflict between one’s desires or the desires of loved ones and the teachings of the Prophet ﷺ, his guidance must take precedence. This is because his guidance is divine guidance. When children learn that this profound love for the Prophet ﷺ is the ultimate expression of their love for Allah, they anchor their faith in the purest form of devotion.
