How do I balance admiration with a realistic understanding of his human challenges?

Parenting Perspective

It is natural for children to view the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ as a figure of perfection, almost beyond human reach. While this admiration is born from love, it can inadvertently make his example seem unattainable. To foster a deeper, more meaningful connection, it is essential to present a balanced picture that honours his divine guidance while also highlighting his very real human experiences. His true greatness lies not in an absence of hardship, but in his beautiful, faith-filled response to every trial he faced.

Sharing His Moments of Vulnerability

To ground his story in reality, we can share moments from his life that reflect our shared human condition. These stories do not diminish his status; rather, they magnify his strength and resilience.

Talk about how he mourned the loss of his children, demonstrating that feeling grief is a natural part of life. Describe the immense hardship of the boycott in Makkah, where he and his followers tied stones to their stomachs to ease the pangs of hunger. Narrate the times he was mocked, rejected, and physically harmed, yet responded with forgiveness instead of anger. Let your child know that the Prophet ﷺ cried, felt tired, and prayed to Allah for strength, just as we do. Highlighting these moments of vulnerability shows that his spiritual fortitude was forged in the furnace of real-world trials.

Making His Perseverance Relatable

Once a child understands that the Prophet ﷺ faced difficulties, his perseverance becomes a source of immense inspiration. His perfect example is not that he never struggled, but that he never allowed struggle to divert him from his purpose or compromise his noble character.

We can link his experiences directly to our children’s lives. When they face unfairness from a friend, we can remind them, ‘The Prophet ﷺ also faced injustice, but he always chose to be kind and patient’. When they feel discouraged by a difficult task, we can say, ‘The Prophet ﷺ also faced obstacles that seemed impossible, but he never gave up trusting in Allah’s plan’. This approach helps them see his life as a blueprint for navigating their own challenges. By blending admiration with empathy, we teach them to follow his example not out of a need for perfection, but out of a heartfelt connection to his journey.

Spiritual Insight

The Quran and Sunnah present the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ as both a divinely inspired messenger and a human being. This duality is not a contradiction but a fundamental aspect of his mission. For his life to serve as the ultimate guide (uswatun hasanah), he had to walk the earth as a man, experiencing the full spectrum of human trials and emotions. His perfection was manifested in his perfect worship, character, and conduct within the context of a human life.

His humanity is a profound mercy from Allah. It makes his example accessible, proving that it is possible to live a life of immense faith, integrity, and compassion while navigating the very real challenges of this world.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Kahf (18), Verse 110:

‘Say, ‘I am only a man like you, to whom has been revealed that your god is one God…’’

This direct command from Allah establishes the Prophet’s ﷺ true nature. It affirms his humanity as the vessel for the divine message. He was not an angel or a supernatural being, but a man chosen to receive revelation. This verse serves as a crucial reminder that the path to God is walked through our human lives, not by escaping them. His role was to show us how.

It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 1211, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘I am but a human being. I forget as you forget. So if I forget, remind me.’

This statement is a beautiful expression of his humility and humanity. By openly acknowledging his own human fallibility in matters outside of revelation, the Prophet ﷺ teaches an important lesson. His greatness was not in being immune to human experiences like forgetfulness, but in his perfect character and unwavering commitment to his divine mission. It shows that true spiritual strength is found in acknowledging our nature while striving to live by the guidance Allah has given us.
