Parenting Perspective
For a child, love for the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ should feel like a warm and comforting presence, not a list of facts to be memorised. While knowledge is important, a true and lasting bond is forged in the heart. The parent’s role is to bridge the gap between the mind and the soul, transforming admiration into a deep, personal, and emotional connection. This is achieved by focusing on feeling and empathy before information and intellect.
Storytelling that Stirs the Heart
The gateway to a child’s heart is through stories that evoke emotion. Move beyond timelines and battles, and focus on the small, intimate moments that reveal his profound humanity and compassion.
Share narratives that allow your child to connect with his feelings. Describe the sadness he felt when he lost his children, the joy he took in the laughter of his companions, and the empathy that moved him to tears when he saw suffering. Instead of just stating facts, ask reflective questions to nurture empathy. For example, after telling a story of his patience, you could ask, ‘How do you think he felt when people were unkind to him, yet he chose to pray for them?’. This approach invites a child to step into the story and connect with his beautiful character on an emotional level, rather than simply observing it from a distance.
The Power of Shared Emotion
A child learns how to love by witnessing love. Your own genuine, heartfelt connection to the Prophet ﷺ is the most powerful lesson you can offer.
Do not be afraid to show your own emotions. Let your child see the smile that comes to your face when you mention his name, or the softness in your voice when you share a moving story from his life. Make the sending of blessings (Salawat) a warm family practice, something you do together with feeling. When a child associates the remembrance of the Prophet ﷺ with the love, warmth, and emotional safety of their family, their own connection will grow organically. Love is ‘caught’ more than it is ‘taught’. When they see that he is the source of your peace and joy, their heart will naturally incline towards him.
Spiritual Insight
An intellectual appreciation of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ can command respect, but it is the emotional connection that unlocks the transformative power of his example. This love is the lifeblood of faith, turning obedience from a duty into a delight. It is the spiritual catalyst that purifies the heart and aligns one’s character with the Prophetic model.
The Quran reminds us that the sending of the Prophet ﷺ was not just a historical event but a supreme act of divine mercy and a personal gift to every believer.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Imran (3), Verses 164:
‘Indeed, Allah conferred a great favour upon the believers when He sent among them a Messenger from themselves, reciting to them His verses and purifying them…’
To truly feel love, a child must understand that the Prophet ﷺ was Allah’s answer to humanity’s needs. He was sent to us, for us. He recites Allah’s words to heal our hearts and purifies our souls with his example. This verse reframes our relationship with him; he is not just a figure to be admired, but the ultimate expression of Allah’s favour upon us.
The path to this emotional closeness is paved with remembrance. The more we mention his name and send blessings upon him, the more his presence is felt in our hearts, which in turn guarantees his closeness to us when we need it most.
It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith 484, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘The closest of people to me on the Day of Resurrection are those who send the most blessings upon me’.
This Hadith provides the practical key to forging an emotional bond. Consistent, heartfelt Salawat is not a mere ritual; it is an act of love that builds a spiritual bridge between a believer and the Prophet ﷺ. It keeps his memory alive, softens the heart, and deepens the connection. When parents cultivate a home where his name is mentioned with love and frequency, they are planting the seeds of a devotion that logic and intellect alone can never achieve. This love becomes a source of comfort in this life and the ultimate means of attaining his blessed company in the next.
