How can storytelling help a child feel that the Prophet ﷺ is part of their family’s life?

Parenting Perspective

Storytelling is the sacred art of weaving memory and meaning into the fabric of a family’s heart. To make the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ a beloved member of the household, his stories must move from the bookshelf to the centre of your daily life. They should be shared not as formal lessons, but as casual, warm conversations that breathe his presence into ordinary moments, making his example the moral and emotional heartbeat of your home.

 Turning Stories into Family Rituals

Interactive storytelling turns passive listening into active engagement, allowing children to internalise the Prophet’s character.

Create a simple family ritual around the question, ‘What would the Prophet ﷺ do?’. When faced with a small dilemma, whether it is a disagreement between siblings or a decision about how to spend an afternoon, posing this question invites his wisdom into your home. You can also make storytelling a shared activity. One night, a parent might tell a story, and the next, a child could be encouraged to retell it in their own words or even act it out. Use your voice to convey emotion—the softness of his mercy, the strength of his conviction. The aim is not a word-for-word recital but a heart-to-heart transmission of his beautiful spirit.

Connecting His Story to Your Story

The final thread in weaving his life into yours is to explicitly link his example to your family’s own values and actions.

When you narrate a story about his honesty in trade, connect it to the integrity you strive for in your own work. After sharing an account of his forgiveness, use it as a gentle lesson for forgiving a sibling’s mistake. This practice demonstrates that his example is not an ancient ideal but a practical blueprint for your family’s character. You can say, ‘We try to be kind to our neighbours because our Prophet ﷺ was the best of neighbours’. Over time, children will stop seeing him as a distant historical figure. He becomes the beloved family mentor whose story informs your own, the ultimate role model whose life gives meaning to yours.

Spiritual Insight

Storytelling is a divinely sanctioned method of teaching, a sacred tool designed to bypass the intellect and speak directly to the soul. In the noble Quran, Allah Almighty Himself uses stories of past nations and prophets not for mere historical record, but to stir the heart, awaken the conscience, and invite deep reflection.

This divine endorsement of storytelling as a pedagogical tool is a clear sign for believers.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al A‘raf (7), Verses 176:

‘So relate the stories that perhaps they will give thought…’

This command is profound. The purpose of a story is not just to entertain or inform, but to lead to tafakkur—deep, contemplative thought. The life of the Prophet ﷺ is the greatest of all stories, for it is the practical, human manifestation of the Quran itself. By relating his stories, parents are not just teaching history; they are planting seeds of wisdom, mercy, and faith that, with reflection, will blossom in a child’s character.

The stories chosen should reflect the Prophet ﷺ’s essential nature, which was to bring ease and hope. His life was a lesson in how to draw people towards faith with beauty and compassion, not to push them away with harshness.

It is recorded in Sahih al Bukhari,Hadith 6125, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘Make things easy for the people, and do not make it difficult for them, and make them calm (with glad tidings) and do not repulse (them ).’

This is the guiding principle for a parent-storyteller. The stories shared should be full of glad tidings—his mercy, his forgiveness, his smile, his love for children. While his struggles are important, the dominant narrative should be one of hope and divine mercy. When a home is filled with such stories, told with love and warmth, the Prophet ﷺ ceases to be an abstract concept. He becomes a living, breathing presence, a beloved member of the family whose example fills the home with light and whose story guides it towards Jannah.
