What can I say when they ask why their journey is harder?

When a child asks why their path feels harder than others, it is not only curiosity; it is often a cry of fatigue, a way of saying, ‘Why me?’ They may feel singled out, left behind, or unfairly burdened. Parents can respond with empathy, honesty, and hope, showing them that while their road may indeed have more bends, it is also a journey of strength, patience, and unique gifts.

Parenting Perspective

Acknowledge Their Struggle Openly

Children do not want their pain dismissed. A gentle acknowledgement is often the first comfort. You might say, ‘Yes, your journey does feel harder at times, and I see the effort you give.’ This recognition validates their feelings and reassures them that they are not carrying the weight alone.

Explain Difference Without Deficit

Help them see that having a different path does not mean having a lesser one. You can say, ‘Some people climb hills, some cross rivers. Both are hard in different ways, but each traveller becomes strong in their own way.’ This metaphor reframes their challenge as a form of growth, not punishment.

Point to Hidden Strengths

Remind your child of the qualities their journey has already built. Patience, resilience, empathy, and creativity often flourish in those who face extra struggles. Saying, ‘You have learned courage that many children your age do not know,’ helps them see value in their experience.

Use Stories of Inspiration

Children connect strongly to narratives. Share stories from the lives of the Prophets and companions, many of whom endured struggles greater than their peers. Highlight how their patience became a source of honour. This links your child’s challenges to a noble tradition of perseverance.

Offer Them Small Choices

Struggles feel heavier when a child feels powerless. Allowing small decisions, such as choosing the order of tasks or picking a calming activity, gives them agency. These moments help them feel that while they cannot change the whole journey, they can still walk it with dignity.

Keep Hope Alive in Daily Speech

Create phrases that consistently lift their spirit. For example: ‘Your path may be steep, but every step counts with Allah Almighty,’ or, ‘Allah Almighty chose your heart for a special kind of strength.’ When repeated, these words sink into their self-understanding.

Spiritual Insight

Islam teaches that struggle is not a mark of weakness but a sign of being chosen for growth and closeness to Allah Almighty. When a child wonders why their road is harder, parents can anchor them in this truth.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Inshirah (94), Verses 6:

‘Indeed, with hardship comes ease…’

This verse does not deny that hardship exists. Instead, it promises that every struggle carries within it moments of relief, growth, and divine support. You can explain to your child, ‘Allah Almighty sees your effort, and with every hard step, ease is coming too.’

It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith 2396, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘The greatest reward comes with the greatest trial. When Allah loves a people, He tests them. Whoever accepts that, wins His pleasure, but whoever is discontent with that earns His wrath.’

This Hadith shifts the perspective of hardship from punishment to honour. For a child, it can be simplified as, ‘Allah Almighty gives harder paths to those He trusts with strength.’ This teaching does not minimise their pain, but it reframes their journey as meaningful, a sign of Allah Almighty’s attention rather than neglect.

Children who learn this balance carry dignity even in difficulty. They begin to see their journey not as an unfair burden, but as a unique classroom where they are learning resilience, courage, and reliance upon Allah Almighty. Parents who echo this truth consistently plant hope deep into the heart of their child, ensuring that even when the climb feels steep, the child knows they are never climbing alone.
