How can I show that Allah delights in their tiny steps as much as I do?

Parenting Perspective

Children flourish when they feel that their efforts are noticed and valued. Parents naturally express joy at first steps, first words, or first attempts at learning. However, the real gift is helping children understand that these moments are not just a source of parental pride, but also a sign of Allah’s mercy and attention. When children grow up knowing that Allah delights in their sincere efforts, they begin to see their lives as sacred and purposeful rather than as a race for human approval.

Linking Milestones to Divine Care

The first step is to link everyday milestones to Allah’s care.

When your child manages to take a first step, you might say, ‘Alhamdulillah, Allah helped you do this.’

When they speak a new word, you could add, ‘Allah is pleased when you try new things.’

This gentle habit plants in their heart the idea that Allah is an active witness to their growth. It is important to avoid separating love for your child from Allah’s mercy; when parents connect milestones to divine blessings, children learn humility and gratitude alongside joy.

Turning Celebrations into Remembrance

Another effective approach is to turn celebrations into moments of remembrance. For instance, after a new milestone, say a short dua together or share a moment of thankfulness, such as ‘Alhamdulillah, Allah gave us this gift today.’ This not only grounds progress in faith but also creates a family ritual of gratitude.

Parents can also use storytelling to illustrate that Allah values even the smallest steps. Sharing stories of the Prophets who showed patience in their early struggles can help children feel that their tiny steps are also precious in Allah’s sight. Above all, your own tone of delight teaches them most powerfully.

Spiritual Insight

Islamic teachings emphasise that Allah Almighty values every sincere effort, no matter how small. What may seem insignificant to people can be weighty in the sight of Allah, because He looks at intentions and efforts rather than results. This perspective helps children grow with confidence that their tiny steps hold meaning.

Every Atom’s Weight is Seen

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Az Zilzal (99), Verses 7:

‘So whoever does an atom’s weight of good will see it…’

This verse shows that even the smallest action is noticed by Allah and will be rewarded. Parents can reflect on this verse with their children, explaining: ‘Allah sees even your tiny steps and He is pleased with them.’ Such reflections anchor the child’s milestones in divine recognition rather than only human celebration.

Valuing the Smallest Good Deed

It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2626, that the Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘Do not belittle any good deed, even if it is meeting your brother with a cheerful face.’

This Hadith makes clear that no act is too small to matter. Parents can use this to reassure children that their early steps, however simple, are honoured by Allah. Just as smiling is a deed valued by Allah, so too are their small achievements, when done with sincerity and gratitude.

By framing milestones through these teachings, parents give their children a deep spiritual anchor. Each step, word, or attempt is not just progress but a gift recognised by Allah Almighty. Children raised with this awareness grow with humility, gratitude, and joy, knowing that their efforts are part of a sacred journey watched over by a Merciful Lord.
