How do I answer ‘why do they get different rules’ without favouritism?

Parenting Perspective

Few questions test a parent’s balance as acutely as when one child asks, ‘Why do they get different rules?’ Whether the issue pertains to bedtime, privileges, or responsibilities, children are quick to observe disparities and interpret them through the exacting lens of fairness. Your fundamental objective is to guide them towards an understanding that fairness within a family environment does not necessarily equate to sameness; rather, it signifies meeting each person’s distinct needs with profound wisdom and careful consideration.

Begin with Empathy, Not Defence

When a child poses this question, they are often articulating a deeper, underlying emotion, perhaps feeling overlooked or less trusted. It is essential to acknowledge the feeling before embarking upon the explanation of the reasoning. A suitable response would be, ‘I can see that this feels unfair to you. It is excellent that you are contemplating what is right.’ This approach immediately defuses any defensiveness and prepares their heart to listen. Children become far more receptive to understanding once they have felt genuinely heard.

Explain Fairness through Context, Not Comparison

Assist your child in recognising that fairness is fundamentally based on the situation and context, not on sibling competition. Use tangible, relatable examples that they can easily grasp:

  • ‘Your younger sister goes to bed earlier because her growing body requires more sleep. You remain awake later because you are older and capable of managing more responsibility.’
  • ‘Your brother currently follows specific extra study rules because he has examinations approaching. When you reach that stage, we shall adjust your rules accordingly.’

These instances clearly demonstrate that rules are not arbitrary rewards or punishments but are instead purposeful tools for achieving balance. Over time, your consistent application of this principle will reinforce the idea that decisions are rooted in wisdom, not parental preference.

Avoid Over Justifying Keep Explanations Simple

Providing unnecessarily lengthy reasoning may inadvertently lead a child to feel that you are defensively justifying guilt rather than simply explaining a truth. Offer short, clear responses that are firmly grounded in principle, such as: ‘Different ages necessitate different rules, but I always endeavour to be fair.’ This approach communicates both firmness and fairness simultaneously. It also models how to conduct a respectful discussion concerning disagreement, which is a vital skill they will utilise in all future relationships.

The Importance of Witnessing Fairness in Action

Children develop belief based on what they observe. Be transparent in showing how privileges are inherently linked to responsibility. For instance, if an older child is permitted to stay up later, ensure they assist with tidying up afterwards. If a younger child receives additional assistance, explain that this is due to their developmental stage, not parental favour. When they perceive consistent balance across various situations, they build trust in your judicious judgement.

Spiritual Insight

The foundation of our faith teaches that justice (‘adl) is one of the essential pillars of righteousness. Allah Almighty commands fairness not in the form of rigid uniformity, but as a wisdom that is constantly guided by truth and the specific circumstance. Parents, being entrusted as guardians of this sacred trust (amanah), must therefore distribute guidance, privileges, and consequences according to what is genuinely right for each child, not merely what appears numerically equal.

Justice Rooted in Divine Wisdom

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah An Nahl (16), Verse 90:

‘Indeed, Allah commands justice, the doing of good, and giving to relatives, and forbids immorality, bad conduct, and oppression. He admonishes you that perhaps you will be reminded…’

This profound verse reminds us that true justice flows from spiritual discernment, not from mechanical sameness. Just as Allah Almighty bestows upon each creation different gifts and trials according to His immense wisdom, parents must guide each child based on their unique maturity, inherent temperament, and individual requirements. Explaining this spiritual reality to your children fosters a deep faith in the divine balance, teaching them that true fairness means giving everyone what assists them in growing towards goodness.

The Prophet ’s Example of Measured Fairness

It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 2587, that the holy Prophet Muhammad  said:

‘Fear Allah and be just among your children.’

The command of the holy Prophet Muhammad  encompasses not only the material distribution of gifts but also the crucial aspect of emotional fairness. Justice among children requires parents to respond to each child with genuine sincerity, appropriate attention, and care that is tailored to their needs. The holy Prophet Muhammad  never treated one child’s needs as less worthy of compassion than another’s. Teaching this Hadith helps your children understand that a parent’s love is unwavering and constant, even when the rules must necessarily differ.

Fostering Cooperation and Trust

When children grasp that the structure of the rules is shaped by love and responsibility, they naturally begin to place trust in the fairness behind your decisions. A son may come to realise that his sister’s earlier curfew is not a form of harsh restriction but a genuine act of protection. A daughter may understand that her brother’s extra chores represent not favouritism, but preparation for the demands of adulthood.

Through your consistent and balanced example, they ultimately learn that fairness does not mean every child receives the identical treatment, but rather that every child receives precisely what they require to thrive. This powerful lesson mirrors the divine pattern of life itself, where Allah Almighty grants each soul unique circumstances, yet judges all by His universal justice and boundless mercy. A home established upon this understanding becomes a sanctuary of peace and profound trust. Children cease comparing themselves to one another and begin to cooperate, knowing with certainty that parental love is steady even when the governing rules are not identical. In their hearts, they will carry forward the true meaning of fairness, a concept that beautifully reflects both wisdom and unwavering faith.
