Parenting Perspective
Children often instinctively view fairness as simply “everyone gets the same thing.” When they observe differences in treatment a sibling receiving extra academic help, a friend being given more time, or a relative being treated with special care they may easily misinterpret it as profound unfairness or favouritism. Your central task as a parent is to fundamentally reshape this understanding. true fairness is about meeting individual needs, not rigidly matching status or quantity. This essential lesson, when taught with consistency and patience, actively nurtures both empathy and wisdom. the valuable ability to perceive true justice through compassion, rather than through limiting comparison.
Begin with Everyday Scenarios
Start the discussion with tangible, real life examples that your child can easily see and recall. You might say: “Your little sister receives help tying her shoes because she is still learning that skill, just like you once needed help. One day, she will be able to help someone even smaller than her, too.” Or, “Your brother currently needs quiet time right now to study for his upcoming exams. When you have exams, we will absolutely make sure you have that necessary space and quiet time as well.” These concrete illustrations clearly demonstrate that differences in how people are treated are purposeful and guided by need, not preferential or biased.
Explain That Needs Are Unique, Not Unequal
Help your children genuinely recognise that every person possesses a unique set of individual strengths, as well as their own challenges. Say, “True fairness means giving each person what precisely helps them do their best.” You can illustrate this concept with simple, evocative analogies: “If two different plants are placed in different pots, one may need much more water than the other in order to thrive. but both plants are absolutely cared for equally.” This transforms an abstract concept into something simple that children can both visualise and understand deeply.
Reinforce Fairness through Action
Children learn far more effectively from what they observe you doing than from what they simply hear you say. When you make a family decision that clearly reflects needs based fairness, narrate the rationale gently and calmly: “Your sister gets to go to sleep earlier because her growing body genuinely needs more rest right now.” “You received extra one on one time with me today because your school project explicitly needed more help to be successful.” This kind of transparency and clear communication reassures children that your choices are consistently guided by justice, not by personal bias or favouritism.
Teach Empathy through Perspective
Actively encourage your children to sincerely imagine and consider the needs of others. Ask questions like, “How would you feel if you were genuinely exhausted or needed extra help with a task?” This simple practice fosters emotional awareness and immediately softens potential resentment. When one child chooses to support another instead of entering into competition, they begin to see fairness as active teamwork. You might add, “Allah Almighty loves when we help each other because He wisely gives everyone different strengths and unique gifts to share.”
Keep Rules Consistent, but Flexible in Spirit
While individual needs undoubtedly differ, the fundamental family boundaries must always remain clear and consistent. Children trust fairness most when they see that rules apply fairly to everyone, even if the specific details of execution vary. For instance, the main rule is that everyone must clean their space, but younger children may have smaller, more manageable tasks. Explain: “The rule itself is the same for everyone, but how we follow it depends on age and ability.” Such consistency ensures that necessary flexibility never appears to be favouritism.
Gradually, your children will grow to fully understand that true fairness is not fundamentally about being identical; it is about being entirely understanding and compassionate.
Spiritual Insight
The noble Quran and Sunnah consistently remind us that spiritual justice is firmly rooted in divine wisdom and boundless mercy. Allah Almighty, the Most Just, gives to each creation exactly what it needs most not necessarily equally in measure, but perfectly in balance. Parents actively mirror this powerful divine principle when they carefully balance love and responsibility according to each child’s unique circumstance and need.
Divine Justice as Perfect Balance
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al An‘am (6), Verses 165:
‘And it is He who has made you successors upon the earth and raised some of you above others in degrees, that He may test you through what He has given you…’
This verse serves as a profound reminder that differences in abilities, resources, and circumstances are all an integral part of Allah Almighty’s design, serving a higher, divine wisdom. Some individuals are granted more wealth, others more patience, some more physical strength, others more gentle wisdom. These differences are not signs of inherent superiority but are spiritual tests of gratitude and fairness. Teaching this truth helps children to understand that variation is both natural and purposeful both in life generally and specifically within their family structure.
The Prophet ﷺ’s Example of Equitable Justice
It is recorded in Bulugh Al Maram, Hadith 184, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Be just among your children in giving gifts, as you would love them all to be equally kind to you.’
This Hadith clearly shows that parental fairness must always be intentional and profoundly sincere. The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ encouraged parents to actively avoid favouritism, but he also wisely guided them with mercy understanding that each child’s needs for support may honestly differ. His exemplary practice teaches that while parental love must be equal, the necessary support and resources may be distributed differently to achieve true justice.
When children fundamentally understand that fairness is consistently guided by unique need, not by superficial status, they actively develop empathy instead of destructive envy. A son who observes his sister receive more focused help for her struggles learns to sincerely support her rather than resent her. A daughter who watches her brother willingly take on greater family responsibilities learns to appreciate effort, not mere privilege.
Through your patient, living example, fairness becomes much more than a simple rule it transforms into a powerful way of living that beautifully mirrors divine justice. Your children begin to see life not as a constant competition for sameness, but as a purposeful journey of compassion, where everyone follows different paths yet possesses equal spiritual worth.
Over time, this valuable perspective significantly strengthens the family bond. Each member learns that parental love wisely adjusts itself to serve them best that a parent’s wisdom in making decisions accurately reflects the boundless mercy of Allah Almighty, who gives to every heart what it truly needs, not what others might unfairly demand. And in that crucial understanding, fairness truly becomes faith in practice.
