How can I explain why adverts and media use temptation to sell?

Parenting Perspective

When children begin to question why adverts always seem to show what is beautiful, exciting, or exaggerated, they are stepping into a world that deliberately plays on human desire. As a parent, you must nurture their awareness, helping your child see how marketing functions so they can guard their values without losing their curiosity about the world. Explaining this concept to your child transforms them from a passive consumer target into an active thinker.

Unmask the Strategy Behind Temptation

Children learn best when ideas are concrete and visual. Watch a short advertisement together and discuss its strategy:

  • What do you think they are truly selling the product or the feeling?
  • Why do they primarily use laughter, glamour, or excitement?
  • What do you notice about how everyone looks?

Explain that advertisers study human emotions like pleasure, belonging, and admiration. Marketers then use these natural feelings to make people associate happiness with buying. Your aim is not to shame these feelings, but to teach your child how easily they can be manipulated.

Tell them: “Good marketing tries to help people find what they need, but many adverts work to make you feel that you need what you only want.” This simple distinction is a powerful tool for teaching critical thinking.

Show the Hidden Mechanics

You can make this lesson practical and engaging by exposing the editing and psychological tools used:

  • Compare packaging: Ask your child why one snack looks “more fun” than another, even though they are similar.
  • Decode slogans: Discuss why specific words like freshcool, or limited edition spark excitement and urgency.
  • Explore editing tricks: Demonstrate how filters or lighting are used to make people and objects look unrealistic or flawless.

By demystifying the tools of temptation, you immediately remove their power over your child’s conscience.

Strengthen Inner Awareness

Beyond analysis, children require an emotional anchor to resist temptation. When they recognise that ads are designed to stir desire, they must learn to pause before reacting. Encourage self-talk phrases like:

  • “Do I truly need this, or do I just want it?”
  • “Why do I suddenly feel left out?”
  • “Would I still value this if no one saw me using it?”

This is spiritual education, teaching them to govern the nafs, the part of the self that seeks endless gratification.

Spiritual Insight

Islam acknowledges the natural human attraction to worldly comforts but reminds us that these attractions are tests, not ultimate goals. The spiritual task is to recognise temptation and choose not to be ruled by it.

Understanding Temptation in the Noble Quran

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Imran (3), Verse 14:

‘Beautified for people is the love of that which they desire of women and children, heaped-up sums of gold and silver, fine branded horses, cattle and land. That is the enjoyment of worldly life, but Allah has with Him the best return…’

This verse perfectly captures the psychology advertisers exploit. Advertising trades on this natural instinct for adornment and possession. By teaching this verse, you help your child understand that temptation is not a new problem; the believer’s task is to recognise it and choose to act with restraint

The Prophet’s  Teaching on Modesty and Restraint

It is recorded in Al Adab Al Mufrad, Hadith 9, that the holy Prophet Muhammad  said:

‘Modesty and faith are companions; when one of them is removed, the other follows.’

This Hadith connects external modesty with inner integrity. The Prophet  warned that when desire and display dominate a society, faith begins to weaken. Explaining this shows your child that resisting constant temptation is not repression; it is protection of the heart’s purity

When you help your child decode media, you are teaching the art of discernment. You show that temptations are not evil in themselves, but become harmful when they hijack our intentions. This teaches that joy cannot be bought, and that peace comes from self-restraint. Your child learns to be a conscious servant of Allah Almighty aware, dignified, and free.
