What should I say if my child tries to copy dance or song trends online?

Parenting Perspective

When a child starts copying viral dances or songs, they are primarily seeking belonging and self-expression. In the digital world, trends become a language of identity; they signal what is admired, accepted, and applauded. As a parent, your instinct to protect their modesty and moral compass is valid, but this must be balanced with empathy. Children often imitate what seems joyful and celebrated, not necessarily what is right or wise. Your goal is to guide that natural instinct without resorting to shaming.

Understand Before You Correct

Do not react immediately. Ask your child to show you the trend. Sit beside them, watch, and listen attentively. This demonstrates respect for their interests and helps you accurately assess the content. Once you have seen it, discuss calmly:

  • “What is it that you like about this trend?”
  • “Do you think all trends are good to copy, or are some better left alone?”

When you begin with curiosity, you keep their heart open to guidance.

Help Them Decode Influence

Explain that most online trends are not spontaneous; they are often designed by people who understand what attracts attention, which is frequently glamour, rhythm, or suggestiveness. Tell your child: “They are selling an image, not just a dance.” Encourage awareness over blind imitation. Say: “You can enjoy music and movement that make you happy, but you do not need to copy what everyone else is doing to belong.”

Offer Alternatives That Uplift

If your child enjoys rhythm or movement, nurture that energy in ways aligned with faith and modesty. Suggest wholesome alternatives that combine beauty with purpose: cultural arts, specific sports, creating family videos that highlight learning or creativity, or enjoying nasheeds (Islamic songs/poems).

When you replace rather than merely restrict, your child discovers that Islam refines joy; it does not eliminate it.

Address Modesty with Wisdom

If a trend involves inappropriate lyrics or movements, avoid harsh lectures. Instead, appeal directly to their sense of self-respect: “You are far too valuable to perform for people’s likes. When you share something online, it stays there even if you regret it. Protect your dignity before the world takes it lightly.” Children who feel proud of their values are less likely to trade them for temporary popularity.

Spiritual Insight

Islam teaches that a believer’s dignity lies in selective participation and restraint. What we see and hear shapes who we become. Online trends often celebrate display and imitation, but the teachings of Islam encourage focus, modesty, and spiritual purpose.

Awareness of Influence in the Noble Quran

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Furqan (25), Verse 72:

‘And those who do not bear false witness, and when they pass by ill speech, they pass by with dignity…’

This verse offers a timeless lesson on restraint. Believers are not drawn into every passing spectacle; they maintain grace when surrounded by what trivialises or corrupts values. Teaching this shows your child that walking away from certain trends is not weakness; it is strength of identity

Guidance on Character from the Hadith

It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 3976, that the holy Prophet Muhammad  said:

‘Part of someone’s being a good Muslim is leaving that which does not concern him.’

This Hadith calls for focus and self-respect. Much of what dominates social media has no moral or spiritual benefit. By explaining this, you highlight that Islam encourages joy, but not purposeless imitation. The Prophet  modelled balanced living: cheerful, kind, yet always mindful of what shaped the soul.

When you guide with warmth, your child will begin to see the emptiness behind hollow applause and the lasting peace that comes from self-respect. They will learn that modesty does not limit expression; it purifies it
