How can parents explain the spiritual purpose behind lowering the gaze?

Parenting Perspective

When children hear the phrase ‘lower your gaze’, they may imagine it means avoiding people or feeling ashamed. Parents must help them see that this command is not about fear or rejection, but about spiritual self-control and respect. Lowering the gaze protects the heart, refines one’s manners, and strengthens awareness of Allah Almighty. It is not about suppressing feelings, but about guiding them with wisdom and purity.

Children today are surrounded by screens, images, and comparisons that constantly invite their attention. Teaching them to lower their gaze helps them realise that what they choose to look at shapes how they think and who they become. Parents can explain that modesty starts with the eyes, because what the eyes see, the heart begins to desire, and what the heart desires often directs behaviour.

Explain It as Respect, Not Restriction

A good starting point is to link this teaching with respect rather than control. Parents can say, ‘Lowering your gaze means choosing what is good for your heart. It helps you treat others with honour, not as objects of comparison or attraction.’ This turns a rule into a value, showing that Islam promotes honour, not limitation.

Avoid presenting the rule as a list of prohibitions. Instead, explain it as a way to protect one’s peace. Children respond better when they see the purpose behind the guidance.

Connect It to Inner Peace

Help children notice how their gaze affects their peace. You might ask, ‘How do you feel after scrolling or watching something that pulls your mind away from goodness?’ Then explain, ‘Allah Almighty wants your heart to stay light. When we lower our gaze, He fills our heart with calm.’ This makes faith feel like protection rather than a burden.

Apply It to Both Boys and Girls

Remind children that the Quran addresses both men and women with equal importance. You can say, ‘Allah Almighty trusts every believer to protect their eyes, because He knows how powerful they are. This teaching is for both sons and daughters.’ When children hear fairness and purpose, modesty becomes a shared act of faith, not an unequal rule.

Model the Behaviour

Children notice far more than they are told. When parents show respect in public, avoid indecent media, and carry themselves with dignity, they teach haya through quiet example. A father who lowers his gaze respectfully and a mother who models grace both demonstrate that modesty is an inner strength

Turn the Act Into Worship

Parents can explain that lowering the gaze is not only self-discipline, but also worship. You can tell your child, ‘Every time you turn your eyes away from something that weakens your heart, Allah Almighty rewards you for your sincerity. It is a small action that shows great faith.’

Spiritual Insight

The Quran describes lowering the gaze as a path to purity. It trains the heart to focus on what brings light, not what clouds it.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah An Nur (24), Verses 30:

‘Tell the believing men to lower their gaze and guard their private parts; that is purer for them. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what they do…’

This verse reminds us that modesty begins with the eyes, for purity of sight leads to purity of thought. Reflective insight: Parents can say, ‘Allah Almighty sees every small effort we make to protect our hearts. Lowering your gaze is not about hiding; it is about remembering that you are never alone, and that your heart belongs to Him.’

It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 6243, that the holy Prophet Muhammad  said:

‘The adultery of the eyes is the lustful look, the adultery of the ears is listening (to what is forbidden), and the adultery of the tongue is speaking (of what is forbidden), and the heart wishes and desires, and the private parts confirm that or deny it.’

This authentic hadith clarifies that every glance carries moral weight, and that true modesty begins with intention

When parents teach this with warmth, fairness, and clarity, children see lowering the gaze not as suppression, but as liberation from temptation—a way to protect their peace, refine their faith, and walk with quiet honour in the sight of Allah Almighty.
