Parenting Perspective
Children learn modesty not only through what they are told, but through what they observe every day. When parents speak, act, and carry themselves with humility and grace, they silently teach their children the true meaning of haya: modesty that shines from within. Modesty is not only about clothing; it is about how one speaks, how one treats others, and how one behaves when unseen. It is a posture of respect and balance that begins in the heart and flows outward into daily life.
The most powerful lesson a parent can give is to live with quiet dignity. When children see that their parents do not boast, mock, gossip, or seek unnecessary attention, they learn that self-control and respect are marks of inner beauty.
Model Modesty in Speech and Tone
Modesty begins with words. Parents who speak gently, avoid shouting, and refrain from gossip or exaggeration create an atmosphere of peace. When children hear their parents say ‘Alhamdulillah’ with gratitude instead of complaint, or respond calmly in disagreement, they learn that strength can exist without harshness.
You can say, ‘When we speak with care, we show respect for ourselves and for others.’ Such small reflections model the essence of modesty: not silence, but self-restraint rooted in awareness.
Practice Modesty in Appearance Without Neglecting Grace
Children observe how their parents dress even inside the home. Parents should aim for clothing that is neat, dignified, and comfortable, without arrogance or excess. When mothers and fathers dress with purpose (clean, modest, and respectful), children naturally understand that modesty enhances beauty rather than hides it.
You can say, ‘We dress in a way that shows thankfulness to Allah Almighty for what He has given us.’ This language keeps the discussion positive and faith-focused.
Show Humility in Achievements and Possessions
Parents who express humility and gratitude rather than pride model a powerful form of modesty. Instead of saying, ‘We have better things than others,’ say, ‘Allah Almighty has blessed us, and we should share or be thankful.’
When parents avoid comparison or superiority, children learn that true worth is not in what one owns but in who one is. Modesty in gratitude builds emotional security and humility in the home.
Demonstrate Respect in Public and Private Conduct
Children watch how parents treat others in shops, traffic, or family gatherings. Greeting politely, lowering one’s voice in public, avoiding sarcasm, and maintaining respectful boundaries all reflect modest conduct.
For example, a father who lowers his gaze respectfully when speaking to women, or a mother who avoids gossip even when others indulge, sends a strong message without a lecture. Modesty seen in action becomes a lifelong memory.
Reflect Modesty in Digital Behaviour
In today’s world, children also notice how parents behave online. When parents use social media responsibly (avoiding oversharing, negative comments, or vanity), they model digital modesty. Parents can share the principle that haya extends to every space, including screens.
A simple reminder such as, ‘We do not post everything because some moments are meant to stay private,’ teaches balance between expression and restraint.
Spiritual Insight
Modesty in Islam is more than behaviour; it is a mirror of the heart. The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that modesty beautifies every action it accompanies. When parents live by this truth, they turn daily routines into spiritual lessons for their children.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Luqman (31), Verses 18-19:
‘And do not turn your face away from people in arrogance, nor walk on the earth with pride. Indeed, Allah does not like the arrogant and boastful. And be moderate in your pace and lower your voice; indeed, the most disagreeable of sounds is the voice of donkeys…’
This verse beautifully captures the outward signs of inner modesty: humility in posture, tone, and manner. Reflective insight: Parents can tell their child, ‘When we walk humbly, speak gently, and act with gratitude, we are following the way that Allah Almighty loves. Modesty is not about hiding; it is about shining quietly, without needing to be seen.’
It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 36, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Modesty is part of faith.’
Through consistent, loving example, parents can show that modesty is not a single act but a way of life an everyday expression of gratitude, self-respect, and mindfulness of Allah Almighty. When lived sincerely, it becomes a form of silent teaching that leaves a lasting mark on a child’s heart: that dignity grows from humility, and the most beautiful people are those whose actions reflect their faith.
