Parenting Perspective
It is a challenging moment when a child mistakes a corrupt act like bribery for a sign of intelligence. This perception, often born from a world that glorifies wealth regardless of its source, is a critical opportunity for a parent to instil a deep and lasting moral compass. The conversation should not be a simple scolding, but a gentle and firm re-calibration of their understanding of what true success looks like. Begin by acknowledging their observation, then guide them to see beyond the surface-level gain to the deeper reality of the act.
The Illusion of ‘Smart’ Money
It is important to deconstruct the idea that this is a “smart” way to earn. True intelligence in work involves skill, creativity, problem-solving, and effort. Bribery involves none of these. Instead, it is a shortcut that bypasses merit and fairness entirely. You can explain that bribery is a theft of opportunity. When someone pays a bribe to get a job or a contract, they are stealing that chance from another person who may have been more qualified, more honest, and more deserving.
The True Cost of Corruption
Help your child see the long-term consequences. While a person taking bribes may seem to prosper for a while, their success is built on a foundation of lies. This brings with it a constant fear of being exposed. More importantly, it results in a loss of self-respect and the trust of others.
Use an analogy they can understand: imagine playing a game where one player pays the referee to cheat for them. The game would no longer be fun or fair, and any “win” would be meaningless. Bribery does the same thing to society. It breaks the rules that everyone relies on for fairness and order. This erosion of trust ultimately harms everyone, creating a world where no one can be sure if success is earned or bought. In the end, those involved in corruption often lose everything: their reputation, their freedom, and the genuine respect of their community.
Spiritual Insight
Islam provides an uncompromising and clear condemnation of bribery, viewing it not merely as a social crime but as a grave spiritual disease that corrupts one’s faith and severs the connection with Allah. The guidance from the Quran and Sunnah frames bribery as an act of consuming forbidden wealth and participating in a system of injustice that invites divine wrath..
The Quran speaks directly to this issue, forbidding the act of using wealth to pervert justice and wrongfully consume what belongs to others.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 188:
‘And do not consume one another’s wealth unjustly or send it [in bribery] to the rulers in order that [they might aid] you [to] consume a portion of the wealth of the people in sin, while you know [it is unlawful]…’
This verse is profound in its clarity. It identifies bribery as a form of consuming wealth unjustly (bil-batil), a term that encompasses all illicit and immoral transactions. It teaches a child that this act is a conscious choice to engage in sin.
The teachings of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ are even more severe, highlighting the immense spiritual gravity of both giving and receiving a bribe.
It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 2313, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘The curse of Allah is upon the one who offers the bribe and the one who accepts it.’
This hadith is one of the most powerful warnings a child can learn. Explain that the “curse of Allah” (la’natullah) means to be cast out from His mercy, His blessings, and His protection. It is a state of spiritual ruin. The fact that the curse applies equally to the giver and the taker shows that the entire transaction is corrupt and condemned. It is not a clever deal; it is a pact that invites the anger of the Creator upon oneself. This understanding helps a child see bribery not as a shortcut to success, but as a direct path to spiritual failure in this life and the next.
