How Do I Help My Child Understand Why Lying on a CV Is Unethical?

When a child considers embellishing a CV, they are often focused on the immediate goal of securing a position, viewing it as a harmless shortcut in a competitive world. It is our role as parents to help them understand that a curriculum vitae is not merely a list of qualifications; it is a testament to one’s character. Lying on it is a profound act of dishonesty that erodes the very foundation of trust upon which a successful and meaningful career is built. 

Explain that every job, every responsibility, is a form of trust (amanah). When we are dishonest about our skills or experience, we are not just misleading an employer; we are betraying that trust before we have even begun. This is a poor foundation for any professional journey. 

The Fragility of a Deceitful Start 

It is vital to help your child see beyond the potential short-term gain. A job secured through falsehood is precarious. It brings with it the constant anxiety of being discovered, the stress of having to maintain a lie, and the inability to feel genuine pride in one’s accomplishments. 

Share practical examples of how such deceit unravels. Talk about professionals who lost their jobs and reputations after their qualifications were found to be fraudulent. This illustrates a crucial life lesson: a reputation for integrity is far more valuable than any position obtained through deception. While a lie might open a door, it can never provide the peace and stability that comes from being honest. 

Building a Career on the Bedrock of Truth 

Encourage your child to focus on their real strengths and to present them with confidence and sincerity. Teach them that there is no shame in not having every qualification for a particular role. In fact, honesty about one’s areas for growth is a sign of maturity and self-awareness that many employers value. 

Help them understand that true professional success is not about appearing perfect on paper. It is about being a reliable, trustworthy, and hardworking individual. By being honest, they invite opportunities that are genuinely suited to their abilities, allowing them to grow authentically. Praise their commitment to truthfulness, reinforcing that sincere effort and honesty are the only reliable paths to a blessed and respectable career. 

Spiritual Insight 

Islam frames truthfulness (sidq) not just as a commendable social trait but as an essential component of faith (iman) itself. A lie on a document like a CV is not a minor infraction; it is a spiritual failing that places a believer in direct opposition to a core divine command: to be counted among the truthful. The Quran calls us to a higher standard, where our consciousness of Allah guides us to maintain absolute integrity in all our affairs. 

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah At Tawbah (9), Verse 119: 

‘O you who have believed, fear Allah and be with those who are true…’ 

This verse is a direct instruction to the believers. The command to “be with those who are true” is not just about seeking honest company; it is about embodying truthfulness in our own being until it becomes our defining characteristic. It teaches a child that honesty is an act of piety and a demonstration of their fear and love for Allah. In the context of a CV, it means choosing to align oneself with truth, even if it seems the more difficult path, out of devotion to the Creator. 

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ linked truthfulness directly to one’s ultimate destiny, making it a matter of salvation. His teachings present honesty not as a policy, but as a continuous spiritual practice. 

It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith 1971, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:  

‘Truthfulness leads to righteousness, and righteousness leads to Paradise. A person continues to tell the truth until they are recorded with Allah as truthful.’ 

This beautiful hadith outlines a clear spiritual trajectory. Honesty is the first step on the path to all-encompassing righteousness (al-birr), which in turn leads to the ultimate reward of Paradise. The phrase “keep telling the truth and striving to tell the truth” highlights that it is a conscious and continuous effort. When a child understands this, they learn that every honest statement, including on a job application, is an act of worship that polishes their character and elevates their status with Allah. It transforms the act of writing a CV from a worldly task into an opportunity to be registered in the divine records as one of the truthful (siddiq).
