How do I show that money is a trust, not for wasting on desires? 

You show that money is a trust by teaching children that it is an Amanah from Allah Almighty a temporary gift to be used purposefully and that spending it thoughtfully reflects character, gratitude, and conscience. 

Parenting Perspective: Money as a Moral Key 

Children see money as ultimate freedom; your role is to refine this by teaching them that freedom is best exercised through responsibility, not recklessness. 

Reframing Ownership and Purpose 

Start with a fundamental truth: nothing truly belongs to us. You might say, ‘Everything we have like our toys, clothes, and even our money comes from Allah Almighty. He trusts us to use them kindly.’ Use a visual metaphor to illustrate this: hold out a coin and say, ‘This is like a key Allah has given you. You can unlock kindness, learning, or joy with it but if you throw it away, the key loses its purpose.’ This gives a moral dimension to every transaction. 

Link choices to purpose by pausing before a purchase and asking, ‘What purpose will this serve? Will this make me better, help someone, or just disappear?’ Model this by sharing your own decisions aloud: ‘I am choosing not to buy this because I would rather use the money for something that matters and lasts.’ 

Teaching and Affirming Amanah 

Introduce Amanah (Trust) as a beautiful responsibility. Say, ‘Allah Almighty trusts us to use His gifts wisely whether it is our words, time, or money.’ When they use money thoughtfully to save, share, or buy something purposeful affirm their maturity: ‘You used your Amanah well. That makes Allah Almighty pleased.’ 

Use Stories of Trust and Waste to anchor ethical lessons. Tell them of two children who received the same money: ‘One spent it quickly on things he forgot by night. The other used part for something useful, part for saving, and part to help someone. The first boy’s pockets emptied; the second’s heart filled. Who do you think used the gift well?’ 

Encourage a powerful pre-spending ritual: Teach a small habit of pausing before buying and quietly asking, ‘Is this the best way to use what Allah has given me?’ The pause creates space for conscience before consumption. 

Spiritual Insight: Trust, Accountability, and Reward 

Islam defines wealth as a profound blessing that carries responsibility. The Quran and Sunnah teach that money is a temporary trust, and how we manage it determines our spiritual reward. 

We Are Trustees, Not Owners 

The noble Quran makes clear that believers are stewards of their wealth, not true owners, and spending with purpose earns great reward. Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Hadid (57), Verse 7: 

‘Believe in Allah and His Messenger and spend from that over which He has made you successors. For those who have believed among you and spent, there will be a great reward.’ 

You can explain to your child, ‘Allah Almighty made us caretakers (successors) of what we have not to waste it, but to use it for good. When we spend with purpose, He rewards us for using His trust wisely.’ This teaches that money is both a test and an opportunity for eternal reward. 

Accountability for Every Coin 

The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ emphasised the meticulous accountability for all wealth. It is recorded in Riyadh Al Saliheen , Hadith 407, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 

‘A servant will not take a step on the Day of Resurrection until he is asked about his wealth how he earned it and how he spent it.’ 

You can tell your child, ‘Even a little money matters to Allah Almighty. When we use it well, it brings reward. When we waste it, it becomes a question we must answer.’ This helps children understand that every coin carries both value and accountability. 

Encourage your child to make a short dua (supplication) when receiving money: ‘O Allah, make me use this trust in a way that pleases You.’ End with reflection: ‘Money that is spent with thought grows into reward. Money that is wasted fades away. Allah Almighty blesses those who respect His gifts and fills their hearts with the richness that no coin can buy.’
