Stories are the most powerful tool to show children that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ lived simply and peacefully. His lifestyle demonstrates that true contentment comes not from having much, but from needing little and maintaining a heart full of gratitude and love for Allah Almighty.
Parenting Perspective: Simplicity as a Source of Admiration
Children often imagine happiness as having more, so your role is to show them that the Prophet ﷺ, who had the power to own anything, chose simplicity because it brought him closeness to Allah Almighty and peace.
The Story of the Date and Gratitude
Begin with the profound gratitude displayed by the Prophet ﷺ: ‘Once the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his family sometimes had only one or two dates to eat. Yet he would begin by saying ‘Alhamdulillah’ and end with ‘Alhamdulillah.’ He said that being thankful for a little brings blessing in it.’ Explain gently, ‘He never complained or felt poor. He showed that peace begins when the heart says thank you before asking for more.’
The Story of the Simple Bed
Share a story that contrasts worldly comfort with spiritual contentment: ‘One night, the Prophet ﷺ slept on a mat made of palm leaves. When he woke up, the marks were visible on his body. His companions wanted to give him a softer bed, but he said he did not need it he wanted to live simply so that his heart stayed close to Allah Almighty.’ You can say to your child, ‘Comfort is not in having the softest bed, but in having a calm heart.’
The Story of Sharing Even When Having Little
Narrate how the Prophet ﷺ prioritised giving over owning: ‘Once, a poor man came to the Prophet ﷺ asking for help. The Prophet ﷺ had almost nothing, but he still gave him what he could. He said that even half a date given in charity brings reward.’ Then explain, ‘He showed that giving, not owning, brings true joy. The more he shared, the more peace he felt.’
Linking Stories to Today’s Life
Connect these examples to your child’s world to keep his example alive in their daily routine. Say, ‘We can live like the Prophet ﷺ when we use things carefully, share what we have, and thank Allah Almighty every day.’ Model His Simplicity yourself when you choose modesty or speak of gratitude, you silently echo the Prophet ﷺ’s example. Say aloud, ‘We do not need too much peace comes from being thankful like the Prophet ﷺ.’
Spiritual Insight: Contentment of the Soul
The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ’s life provides the ultimate blueprint for simplicity, moderation, and contentment, which are the foundation of spiritual richness (ghina).
The Beauty of Just Moderation
The Prophet ﷺ’s life was marked by perfect balance, as described in the Quran. Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Furqan (25), Verse 67:
‘And those who, when they spend, are neither extravagant nor stingy, but are between that, justly moderate.’
You can explain to your child, ‘Allah Almighty loves those who stay balanced who enjoy blessings without forgetting their purpose. That is how the Prophet ﷺ lived every day, always peaceful because he was never excessive.’
True Success is Contentment
The Prophet ﷺ himself defined success not by possessions but by inner contentment. It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 1054, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Successful is the one who accepts Islam, is provided with what is sufficient for his needs, and Allah makes him content with what He has given him.’
You can tell your child, ‘The Prophet ﷺ said that true success is not in having much, but in feeling content. When we are happy with what Allah Almighty gives, we live peacefully like him.’ This helps them see that simplicity is strength, not lack.
Encourage your child to say a simple dua every morning: ‘O Allah, make me content with what You have given me.’ End with reflection: ‘When our homes are simple, our hearts become light. The Prophet ﷺ showed us that peace does not come from what we own, but from how we live with humility, gratitude, and love.’
