How can I validate feelings without changing a sound decision?

Parenting Perspective

Validating a child’s feelings while holding firm on a sound decision requires a delicate balance. The key is to acknowledge their emotions without undermining the reasoning behind your choice. By showing empathy, you can help your child feel heard while still maintaining your role. This teaches them that it is okay to feel disappointed, but that family decisions are made with care for everyone.

Acknowledge the Emotion First

Before you explain anything, start by validating your child’s feelings. You could say, ‘I can see how upset you are about this decision, and it is okay to feel that way. Your feelings are important to me.’ This immediately helps your child to feel seen and understood, which can de-escalate their frustration.

Calmly Explain Your Reasoning

After you have acknowledged their emotion, calmly explain why the decision was made. For example, ‘I know this is not what you wanted, but this decision was made because it is what is best for the whole family right now.’ This provides them with the rationale behind the decision, reinforcing that it was made with care and consideration

Reassure Them of Your Unwavering Support

It is vital to reassure your child that even though the decision stands, you are still there to support them emotionally. Saying, ‘I am here for you, and I want to make sure you feel valued, even when we disagree,’ encourages open communication and ensures they feel supported through their disappointment

Be Consistent While Offering Emotional Support

Finally, maintain your decision while continuing to offer emotional support. A statement like, ‘I know this is hard, but I believe it is the best decision, and we will get through this feeling together,’ shows that you respect their emotions while also demonstrating your role as a calm and steady guide

Spiritual Insight

In Islam, maintaining fairness while also validating emotions is essential for a balanced and nurturing family environment. By recognising and respecting your child’s feelings, even when you cannot change a decision, you are aligning your parenting with the beautiful values of empathy and compassion.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 286:

‘Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear…’

This verse reminds us that we are all capable of handling difficult situations and that emotional challenges, like disappointment, are a normal part of life. By validating your child’s feelings and offering them support, you are helping them to build the emotional resilience needed to navigate these tests.

It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith 1922, that the holy Prophet Muhammad  said:

‘Whoever shows mercy to the people, Allah will show mercy to them.’

This hadith encourages us to always act with empathy and mercy. It reminds us that even when we have to make difficult decisions, showing compassion and understanding is essential. By validating your child’s feelings, you are reflecting this key principle of Islamic kindness.
