Parenting Perspective
When one child grabs a sibling’s cash or vouchers, it is crucial to address the situation with fairness and a focus on responsibility. The goal is to teach them that taking things without permission is unacceptable, while ensuring the consequence is both reasonable and restorative. The key is to reinforce respect for others’ belongings and provide a chance for the child to make amends.
Address the Behaviour Calmly
Begin by addressing the behaviour in a calm but firm manner. You could say, ‘Taking something that belongs to your sibling is not okay. We all need to respect each other’s property in this house.’ This lets the child know that their actions are being taken seriously, while your calm tone prevents the situation from escalating. It is about clarity, not anger.
Set a Fair and Restorative Consequence
Impose a consequence that is appropriate and focuses on repair. For example, ‘You need to return the money to your sibling immediately and give a sincere apology. After that, we will talk about how to prevent this from happening again.’ This makes the child accountable and reinforces the importance of honesty and respect.
Encourage Responsibility
Help your child to understand the importance of taking responsibility for their actions. You might say, ‘It is important to own up to our mistakes. Apologising and making things right is a big part of growing up and being a good person.’ This teaches the value of accountability and restoring harmony.
Use It as an Opportunity to Teach Empathy
Help the child to empathise with their sibling by asking them to consider the other’s feelings. Asking, ‘How would you feel if someone took your money without asking?’ encourages them to see the situation from another perspective. This is a vital step in resolving the conflict with kindness.
Spiritual Insight
In Islam, justice, fairness, and respect for the property of others are highly emphasised. By addressing this situation with a fair and responsible consequence, you are teaching your child the core Islamic values of honesty, respect, and accountability.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 188:
‘And do not consume one another’s wealth unjustly or send it [in bribery] to the rulers in order that [they might aid] you [to] consume a portion of the wealth of the people in sin, while you know [it is unlawful].’
This verse clearly teaches the importance of respecting the property of others and not taking what is not rightfully ours. By imposing a fair consequence for taking a sibling’s belongings, you are aligning your home with this core Islamic principle of justice and honesty.
It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 2454, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Whoever takes a piece of the land of others unjustly, he will sink down the seven earths on the Day of Resurrection.’
While this hadith refers to land, its principle reinforces the seriousness of taking anything that does not belong to us. By teaching your child to respect the belongings of others and to make amends for their mistakes, you are aligning their character with the important Islamic teachings of fairness and accountability.
