Parenting Perspective
When a relative lends money to your teenager without your consent, it can create a range of issues, from confusing financial boundaries to creating feelings of awkwardness. It is important to address the situation calmly, both with your child and the relative. By handling this with care, you can prevent future misunderstandings and help your teen develop a healthier relationship with money.
Address the Situation Calmly with Your Teen
Start by discussing the issue with your teen in a calm and understanding manner. You could say, ‘I understand your relative gave you some money, but it is important that any financial arrangements are discussed with us first.’ This approach focuses on guiding your child and establishing a family rule without accusing them of any wrongdoing. It makes it about process, not punishment.
Set Clear Boundaries with the Relative
It is also necessary to speak to the relative, but do so respectfully. You might say, ‘We really appreciate your kindness and generosity towards our child. In the future, could you please check with us first before giving them money? It helps us to teach them about financial responsibility.’ This sets a respectful but firm boundary.
Use It as a Teachable Moment
Use this situation as an opportunity to teach your teen about managing money. Explain the importance of making wise financial decisions and not accepting loans or large gifts without understanding the implications. This helps your teen to value financial boundaries and thoughtful decision-making.
Ensure Transparency Moving Forward
Reassure your child that open communication about money is important for the whole family. A statement like, ‘If anyone offers you money in the future, let us just make sure we talk about it openly so we can manage everything fairly,’ ensures that future transactions are handled with transparency and family consent.
Spiritual Insight
In Islam, respecting family boundaries is essential for maintaining harmony and trust. By teaching your child the importance of financial responsibility and handling these situations with respect, you are aligning your parenting with the core Islamic values of honesty, transparency, and clear communication.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 282:
‘O you who have believed, when you contract a debt for a specified term, write it down. And let a scribe write between you in justice…’
This powerful verse teaches us the importance of clarity and justice in all our financial dealings. By addressing this situation with your teen and relative openly and ensuring consent is part of the process, you are fostering the transparency and fairness that our faith encourages.
It is recorded in Al Muwatta, Hadith 16, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Shake hands and rancour will disappear. Give presents to each other and love each other and enmity will disappear.’
This beautiful hadith emphasises that giving should be a means of increasing love, not creating problems. Ensuring that financial gifts or loans within a family are handled with consent and clear communication upholds this spirit of fair and considerate interaction.
