Parenting Perspective
When a child yells “you always choose them” over a financial decision, it is often a sign of deep frustration or perceived unfairness. The key is to remain calm and not to react impulsively, even when it is difficult. By acknowledging your child’s feelings and gently explaining your reasoning without becoming defensive, you show them that their emotions are valid, and that your decisions are made thoughtfully and with fairness in mind.
Acknowledge Your Child’s Feelings
Start by acknowledging the emotion behind their outburst. You could say, ‘I can see you are upset because you feel as though I have chosen your sibling over you. It is important to me that you feel you are treated fairly.’ This helps to de-escalate the situation by validating their feelings before you address the issue itself.
Explain Your Decision Calmly
Remain calm and give a clear explanation for why the decision was made. You might say, ‘I understand that you are feeling this way, but I made this decision based on what was needed in this situation. Let us talk about it so you can understand better.’ This clarifies the decision without invalidating their feelings.
Reassure Them of Your Equal Love
Reassure your child that your love for them is equal and that your decisions are not based on personal preference. A statement like, ‘Both of you are equally important to me, and my decisions are made based on what is best for the situation, not out of favouritism,’ can help to prevent feelings of inadequacy.
Take a Breather if Necessary
If you feel tensions rising, it is perfectly acceptable to take a step back. Saying, ‘I think we both need a moment to calm down. Let us talk again in a little while so we can understand each other better,’ ensures that the situation does not escalate, giving both of you time to regain composure.
Spiritual Insight
In Islam, patience, fairness, and understanding are key values when managing difficult situations. By staying calm and fair in the face of your child’s frustration, you are reflecting these important virtues in your home.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 153:
‘O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.’
This verse reminds us that patience is an essential quality for handling all of life’s difficulties. By remaining calm when faced with accusations of favouritism, you are aligning yourself with the Islamic value of seeking help through patience.
It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2593, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘A’isha, verily Allah is kind and He loves kindness and confers upon kindness which he does not confer upon severity and does not confer upon anything else besides it (kindness).’
This hadith encourages us to always respond with kindness. By meeting an outburst with patience and empathy, you are modelling a calm, compassionate approach to conflict and teaching your child the importance of handling difficult emotions with grace.
