Parenting Perspective
Redistributing gifts or financial resources among family members is a delicate matter that must be handled carefully to avoid creating tension. The key is to address the situation with discretion and respect, ensuring that no one feels their contributions are being publicly scrutinised. By approaching this thoughtfully, you can maintain harmony while ensuring fairness for everyone.
Keep the Process Private
When you need to redistribute something, keep the process as private as possible. You might say, ‘Let us handle this quietly so that no one feels uncomfortable. We will make sure everything is fair, but we can keep the details between us.’ This approach minimises the risk of creating a scandal or drawing unnecessary attention to what should be a private family matter.
Explain the Reason with Care
Ensure that any redistribution is based on a genuine desire for fairness or to meet a need, not to publicly correct a perceived imbalance. Explain gently, ‘We want to make sure everyone is supported, so we are adjusting things behind the scenes to keep things balanced.’ This helps others to understand that your intention is to be just and supportive.
Foster a Culture of Understanding
Teach your children to be understanding when these adjustments occur. Explain to them, ‘Sometimes, things need to be rearranged to ensure fairness for everyone. It is important that we support one another with grace.’ This teaches them to accept such decisions without demanding perfection or making a spectacle of the situation. This is about building maturity.
Frame It as an Act of Family Unity
Frame the redistribution as part of a broader effort to strengthen your family bonds. You could say, ‘We are a team, and we all need to work together to make sure everyone is supported. Let us focus on how we can help each other, quietly and respectfully.’ This encourages a sense of mutual care over competition.
Spiritual Insight
In Islam, the values of fairness, discretion, and respect are paramount, especially when dealing with family resources. By redistributing items quietly and justly, you are upholding these important values and promoting unity within your family.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 273:
‘…An ignorant person would think them to be rich because of their restraint. You shall know them by their mark. They do not beg of people with importunity. And whatever you spend – indeed, Allah is Knowing of it.’
This verse beautifully emphasises the importance of giving with discretion, helping those in need without drawing unnecessary attention to their situation. Similarly, redistributing gifts or resources quietly and respectfully ensures that no one’s dignity is diminished, promoting kindness within the family.
It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 7141, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Do not wish to be like anyone, except in two cases: a man whom Allah has given wealth and he spends it righteously, and a man whom Allah has given wisdom and he acts according to it and teaches it to others.’
This hadith teaches us to admire those who use their resources righteously and fairly. By redistributing gifts within your family quietly and thoughtfully, you are embodying this spirit of fairness and avoiding any unintentional harm that could come from a public spectacle.
