How do I create separate jars for spend, save, and give that siblings respect?

Parenting Perspective

Creating separate jars for spending, saving, and giving is an excellent way to teach children budgeting and generosity. However, with siblings, it can be a challenge to ensure each child respects the others’ jars, especially if they are at different stages of understanding money. The key is to make the concept clear, set boundaries, and ensure each child feels ownership over their jars. This cultivates accountability and respect without creating rivalry.

Set Clear Expectations for Each Jar

Start by explaining the purpose of each jar in simple terms. ‘Each of you will have three jars: one for spending, one for saving, and one for giving. The ‘spending’ jar is for things you want to buy now, the ‘saving’ jar is for a future goal, and the ‘giving’ jar is for charity’. This clear distinction helps children understand and respect the boundaries of each one.

Give Each Child Ownership of Their Jars

Allow each sibling to have control over their own jars to build a sense of personal responsibility. You might say, ‘These jars are yours, and you decide how to use the money in each. The saving jar is for a future goal, and the giving jar is for when we help others’. When children feel a sense of ownership, they are more likely to respect the system, knowing it reflects their personal goals.

Introduce Rules for Fairness and Respect

Set family guidelines that teach children to respect each other’s jars. For example, ‘We will donate from your giving jar as a family, and it is your choice how much to give. However, you cannot take money from your sibling’s jars. It is important to respect each other’s property’. This reinforces that each child’s money is their own and that respecting others’ resources is crucial.

Create Opportunities for Collaboration

Create moments where siblings can collaborate on their giving goals, whether by saving together for a larger donation or pooling their savings. ‘Let us work together to save for a family charity donation. Both of you can contribute from your giving jars, and we will decide together where to give the money’. This encourages them to respect each other’s property and teaches them about collective giving.

Spiritual Insight

In Islam, saving, spending wisely, and giving charity are central tenets that teach responsibility and compassion. Allah Almighty encourages us to be responsible stewards of the wealth He provides and to share it with those in need. Creating separate jars is a practical way to instil these values in children from a young age, ensuring they learn the importance of balance and the significance of charity.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 261:

‘The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like that of a seed of grain that grows seven ears, each bearing one hundred grains.’

This verse illustrates the abundant reward of charity. Teaching children to allocate money for charity helps them internalise the idea that wealth is a means to serve others. The concept of giving should not be seen as a loss, but as an investment in the hereafter and an opportunity to earn the reward of Allah.

It is recorded in Sunan Nisai, Hadith 2543, that the holy Prophet Muhammad  said:

‘The best of charity is that which is given when you are rich, and start with those who are dependent upon you.’

This hadith underscores the importance of sincere generosity. By teaching children to give from their ‘giving jar’, you are instilling in them the values of kindness and gratitude, which are at the core of Islamic teachings. The act of giving, especially when done with regularity, benefits the recipient and purifies the giver’s heart.

Through this approach, you can create a system that helps your children manage money responsibly while respecting each other’s choices and fostering a spirit of charity, in line with Islamic principles.
