Parenting Perspective
When siblings start policing each other’s chore lists, it often stems from a desire for fairness. While it is important for children to take responsibility for their chores, this policing behaviour can quickly lead to tension, competition, or resentment. Instead of fostering a collaborative spirit, it creates an environment of mistrust. As a parent, your goal is to encourage teamwork and mutual respect, not just in completing chores, but in how your children support one another. Setting clear boundaries and reinforcing positive behaviour can help resolve this issue.
Acknowledge the Root of the Issue
Start by acknowledging that both children likely have good intentions. ‘I understand you both want to ensure the chores are done right. It is important that we all help, but it is not okay to police each other’s tasks’. This shows understanding of their desire for fairness while setting a boundary that reinforces respect and cooperation.
Set Clear Roles and Responsibilities
Clarify that each child is responsible for their own chores, and it is not their job to check on the other. ‘You each have your own tasks to complete. It is not your job to ensure your sibling is doing theirs. If there is an issue, come to me, and we will talk about it’. This reinforces that they are accountable for their own responsibilities, not for overseeing their sibling’s.
Encourage Teamwork and Positive Reinforcement
Instead of policing, encourage children to support each other. You could say, ‘Let us work together to get the chores done faster. If you finish early, you can help your sibling, but it is important to be respectful’. This shifts the focus from competition to teamwork. Positive reinforcement also helps, for example: ‘I appreciate how you are helping each other today. Keep up the great teamwork!’. This encourages collaboration and mutual respect.
Spiritual Insight
Islam teaches cooperation, mutual respect, and personal accountability. The principle of accountability is not about policing others but about fulfilling our own responsibilities. The Quran encourages believers to support one another and be just in all interactions. By guiding children to understand these values, parents can create an environment where chores are done with respect and support, not control or competition.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Maidah (5), Verse 2:
‘And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is severe in punishment.’
This verse highlights the importance of cooperation in doing good. When siblings work together to complete their chores, they are practising this principle, but when they police each other, they move away from this spirit of mutual respect. Parents can remind children that Allah Almighty encourages cooperation in fulfilling duties.
It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 66, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘None of you truly believes until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself.’
This hadith teaches the value of mutual respect and support. By applying this to chores, parents can encourage their children to view household tasks not as opportunities for control, but as chances to help one another. This mindset will reduce the tendency to police and instead promote a spirit of collaboration.
Through this guidance, parents can foster a household where chores are completed with respect, cooperation, and love, in line with the Islamic principles of mutual support and fairness.
