Parenting Perspective
When twins expect identical presents but have different needs, the situation can be challenging. While they share a unique bond and often desire equal treatment, it is important to acknowledge that their individual needs may differ, even though they are the same age. Children, including twins, have unique personalities and preferences, meaning a gift that is perfect for one may not hold the same value for the other. As a parent, your challenge is to manage this in a way that honours both their individuality and their shared bond, ensuring they feel equally loved without fostering unhealthy comparison.
Acknowledge Their Desire for Equality
Start by acknowledging their desire for identical presents. It is natural for children, especially twins, to want to feel they are treated equally. You could say, ‘I know you both love the idea of having the same gift, but let us talk about how we can make sure you both feel equally loved in your own unique ways’. This shows you understand their need for fairness while preparing them to accept that fairness does not always mean identical gifts.
Consider Their Individual Needs
Help them understand that gifts can be tailored to their individual needs. Explain that while receiving the same thing is appealing, their interests may differ. For example, ‘Although you both want the same gift, you each enjoy and need different things. Let us think about what truly makes each of you happy or helps you grow’. This encourages them to value the thoughtfulness behind a gift, not just its external similarity.
Introduce Shared Experiences Over Identical Items
Rather than focusing solely on identical items, consider a gift that can be enjoyed together while still acknowledging their separate interests. For instance, ‘This year, we are going to give you each something special for yourselves, and also something you can both enjoy together, like a game or a fun activity’. This reinforces the idea that while their gifts might differ, their shared experiences remain equal and valuable.
Spiritual Insight
Islam teaches that fairness is about giving each person what they need, not simply what they expect. Allah Almighty encourages us to consider individual needs when giving, whether it is gifts or any other form of provision. This principle of giving according to individual requirements is central to the Islamic understanding of justice and generosity.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 286:
‘Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear.’
This verse beautifully illustrates that what Allah Almighty gives to each individual is in accordance with what they need or can appreciate. In the case of twins, one child may need a more educational gift, while the other might benefit from something creative. Just as Allah provides for each soul in the way best suited for them, so too should gifts be chosen based on individual needs.
It is recorded in Al-Adab Al-Mufrad, Hadith 594, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Give gifts and you will love one another.’
This hadith highlights that giving should benefit the recipient. By choosing gifts that reflect each twin’s unique needs, you are acting with generosity and thoughtfulness. Whether a gift is identical or different, the intention to serve the child’s best interests is what is truly significant.
By teaching your children the value of gifts chosen with care and intention, rather than focusing only on identical presents, you help them grow in gratitude and appreciation for thoughtfulness. This approach nurtures a deeper understanding of fairness that extends beyond material items, aligning with Islamic values of compassion and consideration.
