Parenting Perspective
Children are naturally tangible thinkers. To them, ‘provision’ or ‘blessings’ usually look like things they can hold: a new toy, a favourite meal, pocket money, or a high score in a game. Because the material world is so loud and visible, they often miss the quieter, invisible forms of sustenance that truly feed their hearts. This blind spot can lead to a feeling of emptiness; they might have a room full of things but still feel ‘poor’ because they do not recognise the wealth of connection surrounding them.
Naming the Invisible Gifts
You can change this by verbally labelling acts of love as Rizq in the moment they happen. When a friend calls them, when a sibling shares a joke, or when a grandparent hugs them, intervene gently with a new definition. You might say, ‘Look at how much that friend cares about you. That laughter is a form of Rizq just as much as your dinner is.’ By giving love a spiritual weight, you validate it as a tangible blessing.
Shifting the ‘Wealth’ Metric
Children often measure their day by what they got. Try shifting their attention to who was with them. If they come home disappointed that they didn’t win a prize or get a specific item, validate that feeling, but then widen the lens. You could say, ‘I know you wanted that toy, and it is okay to be sad. But I also saw how your friend waited for you at the gate. Allah Almighty didn’t send the toy today, but He sent you company so you wouldn’t be lonely. That is a heavy kind of Rizq.’
The ‘Delivery System’ of Love
Help them understand that people are just the delivery system for Allah Almighty’s care. When someone is kind to them, it is because Allah Almighty placed kindness in that person’s heart specifically for them. This protects their self-esteem; they realise they are loved not just because they are ‘cool’ or ‘smart’, but because Allah Almighty desires them to be comforted. It makes every high-five, hug, and kind word feel like a direct message from the Divine.
Spiritual Insight
We tend to teach children that Rizq is the bread on the table, forgetting to teach them that the hand passing the bread is also Rizq. By expanding their definition of provision, we align their hearts with the reality that emotional nourishment is a deliberate gift from their Creator, often distributed through the hearts of those around them.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Maryam (19), Verse 96:
‘Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds – the Most Merciful will appoint for them affection.’
This verse reveals a powerful spiritual mechanism: love is not random, nor is it simply a human emotion. It is assigned by Allah Almighty. The affection people feel toward a believer is placed in their hearts by the Most Merciful Himself. This helps children understand that when someone genuinely cares for them, chooses them, comforts them, includes them, that affection is a divine allocation of Rizq. It redefines love as something sacred: a spiritual provision that follows faith, goodness, and sincerity.
It is recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 7485, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘If Allah Almighty loves a person, He calls Gabriel, saying, ‘Allah Almighty loves so and so, O Gabriel love him’ So Gabriel would love him and then would make an announcement in the Heavens: ‘Allah Almighty has loved so and-so therefore you should love him also.’ So all the dwellers of the Heavens would love him, and then he is granted the pleasure of the people on the earth.’
This profound Hadith teaches our children that the love they receive from friends, family, and community is not accidental. It begins in the Heavens. When a child feels lonely or unappreciated, this knowledge is a fortress. It reminds them that true connection is not forced or bought; it is a descent of love from Allah Almighty, cascading down through the angels until it settles in the hearts of people on earth. When they understand this, they stop chasing popularity and start cherishing true connection as a divine sign.
Your child will walk through the world differently when they know that every act of kindness they receive is an echo of a conversation that happened in the Heavens. They will feel richer, not because of what is in their pockets, but because of who is walking beside them, knowing that this companionship is the sweetest Rizq of all.
