Parenting Perspective
When relatives or friends disseminate misinformation concerning your child’s condition or necessary needs, it can be extremely tempting to react defensively. However, calm correction is significantly more effective than emotional confrontation.
Prioritising Factual and Neutral Responses
Begin by accepting that most misinformation stems from a lack of awareness, not genuine malice. Respond using short, factual clarity instead of expressing emotional frustration. A strong example is: ‘Actually, this is not about preference; it is a medical restriction that we have confirmed thoroughly with their specialist.’ This neutral and authoritative tone allows people to absorb the information without feeling personally attacked or judged. You must maintain a neutral tone and avoid escalation, use concise, fact-based statements, and frame your actions as medical necessities, not choices.
Modelling Dignity and Composure
It is crucial to avoid debating or arguing in front of your child. If a discussion begins to grow tense, gently steer it away by stating, ‘Let us talk about this later,’ and immediately refocus the moment on something positive and uplifting. Your child is observing and learning from your tone how to handle ignorance with dignity. At home, continuously reassure them that misinformation says nothing negative about them—it only reflects others’ limited understanding.
You can also prepare simple, polite phrases that convey unshakeable firmness without aggression:’I appreciate your concern, but this specific protocol is what keeps them safe.”We have clear, specific guidance from their doctor, and it works very well for us.’These statements quietly anchor your confidence and authority. Over time, your consistent composure builds respect, and even those who disagree will eventually learn to trust your calm, measured authority.
Spiritual Insight
The teachings of the Quran and Sunnah provide a profound methodology for dialogue, emphasising that the pursuit of truth must always be coupled with wisdom and gentleness.
The Quran clearly instructs believers on the appropriate and most honourable manner of engaging in dialogue, particularly when guiding others to correct information.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Nahl (16), Verse 125:
‘Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction, and argue with them in a way that is best…’
This verse beautifully outlines the essential manner of dialogue for believers. When misinformation spreads, wisdom and gentleness—not argument or hostility—should govern your response. True correction uplifts the truth; it does not humiliate the person. By speaking with sincere patience and clear communication, you fulfil your role as a person of truth while actively working to maintain harmony within the family structure.
The Hadith emphasises that gentleness is an intrinsic quality that enhances every situation and interaction it touches.
It is recorded in Riyadh Al Saliheen,Hadith 224, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘The believers in their mutual kindness, compassion and sympathy are just like one body. When one of the limbs suffers, the whole body responds to it with wakefulness and fever.’
This hadith teaches that gentleness enhances every form of interaction. When you counter misinformation calmly, your composure becomes a form of da‘wah (invitation to truth). It shows others that Islamic character is not about aggressively winning arguments, but about preserving the truth with grace and integrity.
By embodying wisdom, humility, and calm, you show your child that defending the truth does not require harshness. It requires profound trust in Allah Almighty—knowing that truth, when spoken with sincerity and gentleness, will always find its proper place and be accepted.
