How Do I Remind Them They Are More Than Their Restrictions?

Parenting Perspective

When a child lives with food restrictions or health limitations, their world can inadvertently begin to revolve around what they cannot do or what they cannot consume. To help them remember that they are more than their restrictions, it is essential to expand their identity through cultivating belongingcreativity, and a sense of purpose

Shifting Focus from Condition to Character

Begin by focusing intentionally on what makes them uniquely valuable—perhaps their kindness, their innate curiosity, or their delightful sense of humour—so that their overall sense of self grows far beyond the confines of dietary rules or limitations.

Use language that consistently separates the child from the condition. For instance, instead of saying, ‘you are allergic,’ gently rephrase this to, ‘your body reacts to this food.’ This crucial linguistic distinction prevents them from internalising the restriction as their core identity.

Encouraging a Life of Action and Gifts

Encourage them to engage in activities where their limitations are rendered largely irrelevant—this might include artsreadingvolunteering, or outdoor play. Praise their effort and excellent character far more frequently than you praise their compliance with rules. This foundational approach teaches them that their inherent worth lies in who they are, not in what they manage or avoid.

At home, make a point of celebrating their achievements, rather than their necessary medical routines. If they express frustration or sadness, validate their feelings immediately before gently redirecting their perspective. You can say: ‘It is okay to wish things were easier—but I love how you bravely keep going.’

By filling their world with experiences that affirm their gifts and strengths, rather than their gaps and weaknesses, you powerfully remind them that their restrictions are merely one small thread in a much richer and more beautiful tapestry of who they are—a person belovedcapable, and chosen by Allah Almighty with both wisdom and purpose.

Spiritual Insight

The Quran provides a clear and magnificent affirmation that every human being is inherently honoured.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Isra (17), Verse 70:

‘And We have certainly honoured the children of Adam and carried them on the land and sea and provided for them of the good things, and preferred them over much of what We have created, with [definite] preference…’

This verse affirms that every human being carries an inherent dignity bestowed by Allah Almighty—a dignity that is not defined by their ability, their circumstance, or any temporary physical limitation. Teaching your child this profound truth cultivates a self-respect that transcends any physical or social differences they may encounter. When they truly realise that their worth was written by Allah Almighty Himself, no earthly restriction can diminish their sense of honour.

The Sunnah guides the believer to focus on the eternal, internal qualities of faith, rather than transient external appearances.

It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 4143, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘Allah does not look at your bodies nor your forms, but He looks at your hearts and your deeds.’

This Hadith fundamentally realigns a person’s value with their intention and character, not with their external or physical conditions. Share this with your child in gentle, reassuring words: ‘Allah loves what is in your heart, not what is on your plate or what your body can do.’ It reminds them that their true identity is built upon sinceritygratitude, and kindness—qualities that absolutely no restriction can ever take away from them.

When a child begins to see themselves primarily through the lens of faith, their self-view expands immediately from a focus on limitation to a powerful understanding of their purpose. They come to understand that their restriction is not their definition, but a chapter in their ongoing story—one through which they are given the opportunity to shine with patience, profound resilience, and the quiet, dignified strength of those truly honoured by Allah Almighty.
