Parenting Perspective
Teasing regarding food choices can cause a child to feel exposed, isolated, or deeply ashamed. Protecting them necessitates a carefully balanced approach that incorporates preparation, empathy, and advocacy. When a child’s faith is securely aligned with their personal confidence, the impact of teasing is significantly diminished. Your child learns that their ultimate strength does not lie in conforming to others’ expectations, but in standing firm—with grace, immense courage, and complete reliance upon Allah Almighty, who never permits the patient and dignified believer to go unnoticed.
Cultivating Confidence and Readiness
The essential first step is to equip your child emotionally before they encounter any difficult or challenging social situations. Teach them simple, composed responses that they can use immediately. Practise statements such as:
‘I eat differently because it keeps me healthy.’
‘That particular food does not work for me.’
Practising these responses repeatedly at home ensures that they become intuitive. Confidence in knowing exactly how to respond frequently prevents the teasing from escalating into a persistent and damaging issue.
Securing Support from Teachers and Carers
Subsequently, it is imperative to speak with teachers or caregivers discreetly. Clearly explain the sensitivity of your child’s dietary requirements and request their gentle yet firm enforcement of respectful behaviour within the group. A calm, well-informed adult can intervene early to stop any mockery before it becomes habitual. Additionally, remind your child that teasing reflects the teaser’s misunderstanding or lack of knowledge, not the child’s own worth. Reassure them that their restraint and adherence to their dietary needs is a sign of maturity and responsibility.
Fostering Self-Esteem and Dignity
Within the home environment, continuously nurture your child’s self-esteem through cultivating a strong sense of belonging and pride. Celebrate their safe food choices and involve them directly in meal preparation. You may also share treats that others can safely enjoy, ensuring inclusivity. When you successfully frame their diet as being both normal and dignified, you subtly instruct them—and those around them—that difference warrants respect, not ridicule. Over time, your consistent empathy will become their most reliable shield, building profound resilience rooted in genuine self-assurance.
Spiritual Insight
The teaching of the Quran provides profound insight into the absolute necessity of protecting human dignity and honour.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Hujurat (49), Verse 11:
‘O you who believe! Let not one people ridicule another people; perhaps they may be better than them…’
This verse unequivocally condemns all forms of mockery and acts as a powerful reminder that dignity is an inherent right of every believer. Sharing this revelation gently with your child helps them understand that Allah Almighty Himself defends the honour of those who are mocked. Their resultant restraint and patience, when enduring such adverse treatment, spiritually elevates their rank. This divine instruction also mandates that parents must advocate kindly but firmly when others mock difference, as protecting a person’s honour is itself a form of worship and obedience.
The Sunnah establishes a clear and comprehensive framework for respect and honour within the community of believers.
It is recorded in Riyadh Al Saliheen, Hadith 235, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘A Muslim is the brother of another Muslim; he does not oppress him, nor does he abandon him, nor does he look down upon him. Piety is here,’ and he pointed to his chest three times.’
This Hadith powerfully emphasises the virtues of empathy and honour among Muslims. By teaching your child this vital prophetic lesson, you remind them that individuals who resort to teasing have momentarily forgotten the adab (manners) of their faith. Encourage your child to respond always with calm dignity and, if appropriate, to pray for those who mock them, thereby embodying a superior spiritual character.
