What Should I Do When Family Calls Me Overprotective?

Parenting Perspective

It is a common scenario for the deep love and necessary care required for an allergic child to be misinterpreted by extended family members as overprotection. Their judgment often stems from a lack of understanding regarding the constant risk involved, viewing the rigour as a personality trait rather than a safety protocol. The parent’s strategy must be to acknowledge their feelings while standing firm on medical necessity.

Acknowledging Concerns While Sharing Proof

The first step is to recognise that their comments, however frustrating, are often rooted in familial affection, albeit poorly expressed. Acknowledge their concern“I know it feels strict or excessive, but these precautions keep [child’s name] healthy and alive.” This phrase validates their viewpoint before asserting the essential truth.

The next, crucial step is to calmly share medical proof. Instead of relying on emotional pleas, present objective evidence. This might involve briefly referencing doctor’s notes, test results, or official medical guidelines. The facts speak for themselves and remove the conflict from the realm of opinion. Avoid lecturing or attempting to force a complete change of perspective. Instead, invite empathy“Imagine if a small, seemingly harmless bite made your child seriously ill; that is the reality we manage every day.” When you consistently stay composed, people eventually come to trust your judgement and your consistency.

Stewardship, Not Overprotection

The parent must internalise the conviction that protecting your child is not overprotection it is stewardship. This reframing is essential for maintaining inner peace. You are not a nervous parent; you are a vigilant manager of a serious health condition. This requires you to set and enforce firm boundaries. These boundaries should be established with calm authority, making it clear that while you value their input on many matters, this specific area falls under medical necessity and parental responsibility.

Spiritual Insight

The Islamic spiritual tradition offers a powerful framework that elevates parental vigilance to a matter of sacred responsibility and obedience, confirming that safeguarding the child is a fundamental act of faith.

The Quran explicitly warns believers against betraying the trusts placed in their care. The child, their health, and their safety are among the greatest trusts (amanah) bestowed upon parents by Allah Almighty.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Anfal (8), Verse 27:

‘O you who believe! Do not betray Allah and the Messenger, nor betray your trusts while you know [the consequence]…’

This verse establishes that children are trusts (amanah); guarding them is obedience, not exaggeration. When a parent implements rigorous food safety measures, they are acting in direct response to this divine command to protect the trust. This spiritual clarity provides an impenetrable defence against the label of “overprotective,” because the parent’s concern is rooted not in neurosis, but in profound accountability to the Creator.

The teachings of the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ further define the parent’s role as one of accountability and careful guardianship over their flock. This makes the mundane tasks of allergy management part of a spiritual duty.

It is recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 7138, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘All of you are shepherds and each of you is responsible for his flock… A man is the shepherd of his household and is responsible for his flock. A woman is the shepherd of her husband’s household and is responsible for her flock… a servant is the shepherd of his master’s property and is responsible for his flock. So all of you are shepherds and each of you is responsible for his flock.’

This Hadith confirms that parental vigilance is worship it is accountability before Allah Almighty, not overreaction to fear. The word shepherd (raa’in) implies active protection, foresight, and responsibility. The parent is charged with overseeing the well-being of their children and will be questioned about this care on the Day of Judgment. Viewing strict safety measures through this lens transforms the frustrating moments of family judgment into peaceful moments of spiritual certainty, reinforcing that the commitment to health is a fundamental act of devotion.
