How Do I Respond When People Say Allergies Are Made Up?

Parenting Perspective

When parents are faced with the deeply dismissive claim that their child’s life-threatening allergies are “made up” or exaggerated, it naturally provokes frustration. This scepticism often stems from ignorance or an inability to comprehend what they do not directly experience. The parent’s most effective response must be rooted in calm facts, not confrontation. Your goal is to stand firm with dignity, not to win an argument.

Prioritising Clarity Over Combat

Truth does not need volume; it needs steadiness and clarity. When confronted by a sceptic, begin by making a simple, factual statement that immediately corrects the misconception without attaching emotion: “It is an immune condition where the body mistakenly attacks safe proteins; even small exposure can cause serious, life-threatening harm.” This scientifically grounded explanation reframes the issue from a psychological choice to a biological reality.

It is essential to keep the tone steady and confident, avoiding argument. If the person requires further context, offer brief, relatable examples such as explaining that the severe reaction is akin to how some people react to dust or pollen, but with systemic, potentially fatal consequences. This demystifies the condition by linking it to familiar immune responses.

Modelling Composure and Boundary Setting

If the person persists in their mocking or disbelief, the parent’s duty shifts from educating them to protecting the child from overhearing the hurtful scepticism. Do not engage in an extended debate. Instead, set a firm boundary by politely ending the conversation or physically moving the child away.

The most profound lesson the child learns in this moment is how to maintain their composure and self-respect. Children learn this composure by watching you stand firm with dignity. They internalise that their medical truth is non-negotiable, and that they do not have to justify their existence to ignorant people. The parent’s steady refusal to argue models the strength of quiet, internal certainty.

Spiritual Insight

The Islamic spiritual tradition offers a profound model for responding to ignorance and harshness with grace, affirming that composure is the highest form of strength, directly sanctioned by divine command.

The Quran provides a foundational command for how believers should conduct themselves when they are addressed or challenged by those who are ignorant or rude. This verse demands a response that elevates the believer above the level of the provocation.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Furqan (25), Verse 63:

‘And the servants of the Most Merciful are those who walk upon the earth easily, and when the ignorant address them harshly, they say words of peace…’

The parent, as a servant of the Most Merciful (Ibad Ar-Rahman), is called to embody this sublime level of conduct. When others, through their ignorance, address them harshly by dismissing their reality, the spiritual response is to say words of peace—or to remain silent and composed. This grace in response is not weakness—it is wisdom rooted in faith (iman). This internal discipline allows the parent to deliver the truth calmly, fulfil their duty of protection, and remain inwardly undisturbed by the superficial comments of the ignorant.

The prophetic teachings clarify that the most challenging and valuable form of strength is not physical dominance over others, but mastery over one’s own emotional reactions, particularly anger.

It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 6114, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘The strong is not the one who overcomes the people by his strength, but the strong is the one who controls himself while in a state of anger.’

The moment someone suggests an allergy is “made up” is one that naturally incites anger. This Hadith serves as the spiritual instruction manual: the parent’s primary focus must be on controlling himself when angry. This spiritual discipline ensures that the parental response is measured and effective, rather than retaliatory and emotionally damaging to the child witnessing it. By choosing calm strength, the parent demonstrates a higher form of moral authority that disarms ignorance faster than argument ever could, protecting both the family’s peace and their dignity in the eyes of Allah Almighty.
