What helps me stop replaying the incident in my head?

 Perspective

The tendency to mentally re-enact a crisis incident is a natural but exhausting response to perceived trauma, often driven by the brain’s need to ensure future safety. To break these loops of retrospective worry, one must consciously replace them with constructive ladders towards future preparedness and closure. The goal is to move from endless reviewing to decisive planning.

Shifting from Review to Resolution

A crucial technique involves creating a brief, structured process that formalises reflection and prevents it from becoming obsessive rumination. This is achieved through a written debrief that precisely delineates three stages:

  1. Facts: Objectively recount what occurred without emotional language.
  1. Lessons: Identify two or three concrete actions or changes needed.
  1. Next Steps: Document specific preparatory tasks (e.g., ‘Check adrenaline pen expiry’, ‘Speak to the school nurse’).

Once this documented plan is complete, it is vital to enforce a closing statement such as: ‘The plan is updated; we are prepared for next time.’ This serves as a psychological signal that the file is closed for the present moment.

Applying Grounding and Time Boundaries

To counter the intrusive nature of the memories, parents must implement strict time boundaries for reflection. For example, explicitly state: ‘I shall reflect for ten minutes, documenting any new insights, and then I must move on to the next task.’ This prevents the incident from colonising the entire day.

When a memory loop begins, immediately engage in grounding techniques to re-orient the mind to the present moment. Simple, reliable grounding methods include: slow, deep diaphragmatic breathing; focusing on the physical sensation of one’s feet on the floor; or reciting a quiet Dhikr (remembrance of Allah Almighty) while focusing on the words. A short, brisk walk can also physically interrupt the mental cycle.

It is important to understand that if intrusive memories persist, impede daily function, or are linked to physical symptoms, seeking professional assistance from a counsellor or therapist demonstrates strength, not weakness. Processing trauma effectively is an act of courageous self-stewardship.

Spiritual Insight

The cyclical replaying of a distressing incident is often the spiritual manifestation of the heart’s unrest . The remedy lies directly in turning to Dhik, the remembrance of Allah Almighty, which is the assured source of inner peace and tranquility. The Islamic tradition offers specific, powerful invocations that function as immediate spiritual anchors when the heart is distressed.

The fundamental spiritual assurance against mental torment is rooted in the Quranic declaration that the heart’s ultimate rest is achieved through Dhikr.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Ar Raad (13), Verse 28:

‘Surely, by the remembrance of Allah hearts find rest…’

The practical application of this verse is to consciously and immediately replace the mental loop of the incident with the remembrance of Allah Almighty. This is a protective measure against the whispers that inflate worry and fear.

For the parent striving to manage overwhelming responsibilities and fears, the Dua (supplication) that affirms Allah Almighty’s singular power is a profound shield against anxiety. This phrase acknowledges the limits of human capability and places reliance upon the Divine.

It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith 3601, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺsaid:

‘Lā ḥawla wa lā quwwata illā billāh’ is a treasure from the treasures of Paradise.’

The meaning, ‘There is no power and no strength except with Allah’, is a declaration that removes the emotional burden of the incident from the parent’s shoulders, confirming that all events, and the power to overcome them, rest with the Almighty. This Hadees beautifully ensures the provision of an amazing prayers to Muslim for their well-being. For the parent striving to manage overwhelming responsibilities and fears, the Dua (supplication) that affirms Allah Almighty’s singular power is a profound shield against anxiety.
