Parenting Perspective
Parental anxiety is often highly contagious; children sense fear intuitively before they process words. If a parent flinches, hovers, or over-checks every bite with visible tension, the child’s anxiety around food will inevitably deepen and solidify into a fear of eating. The essential parental task is to model quiet confidence so that safety becomes normal, not tension-filled.
Projecting Calm and Certainty
To prevent the transfer of fear, parents must consciously manage their physical and emotional responses during mealtimes and food-related activities. Instead of reacting instinctively, parents should practise a brief but intentional pause: pause, smile, breathe, and then speak calmly, stating with measured certainty, “We have checked this carefully; this is safe.” This deliberate action replaces an anxious atmosphere with one of control and certainty.
Over time, parents must transition away from constant supervision towards quiet, distanced supervision. Gradually let them make small, safe food choices independently, such as choosing a fruit or a pre-checked snack from a safe bag, while you remain nearby but unobtrusive. This process helps the child regain a sense of autonomy and normalises the eating experience.
Fostering Empowerment Over Anxiety
The language used must reflect confidence in the child’s capacity for safe behaviour, replacing fear-based warnings with empowering affirmation. It is vital to stop using phrases such as “Be careful” and intentionally replace them with “You know what to do” or “We are prepared.”
Praise Specific Actions: Actively praise their courage and competence when they correctly execute a safety check, such as reading a label or asking an adult before eating something new: “You remembered your checks well done.”
Normalising Safety: The goal is for safety to become a normal, integrated habit, not a source of constant warnings. This quiet confidence safety wrapped in calm, not constant warnings is what helps the child overcome their anxiety and view food positively again.
Spiritual Insight
The Islamic spiritual tradition offers powerful guidance for overcoming fear through sincere faith (iman) and the practical application of the knowledge and blessings bestowed by Allah Almighty.
The Quran prohibits believers from succumbing to despair and encourages the certainty that true believers possess inherent superiority over their emotional weaknesses. Fear is a temporary weakening, while belief is an enduring source of strength.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Imran (3), Verse 139:
‘So do not lose heart nor fall into despair, for you will be superior if you are true believers…’
This verse provides the spiritual instruction to the parent: do not lose heart due to the fear of recurrence. Faith anchors courage. The parent’s spiritual superiority, rooted in genuine belief, empowers them to approach the challenge with resilience. This spiritual fortitude protects both the parent from despair and the child from inheriting that debilitating emotional state. Fear weakens, but belief strengthens both parent and child by shifting their focus from potential harm to divine promise and protection.
The Hadith emphasises that true aspiration should be directed towards beneficial knowledge and the correct, diligent use of the provision granted by Allah Almighty. In the context of allergies, this applies directly to the knowledge of the medical plan and the correct use of safe food.
It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari,Hadith 7529, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Not to wish to be the like of except the like of two (persons): a man whom Allah has given the knowledge of the Qur’an and he recites it during the hours of the night and the hours of the day; and a man whom Allah has given wealth and he spends it (in Allah’s Cause) during the hours of the night and during the hours of the day.’
This wisdom is spiritually applicable: mastery over fear comes through knowledge and the correct use of what Allah Almighty has provided whether that is the medical knowledge to manage the allergy, the food safety protocols, or the ability to purchase safe nourishment. By focusing on diligently acquiring and applying this knowledge (the Book) and spending their provision (the wealth) in the most careful, correct way (the right way), the parents fulfil a spiritual ideal. This dedication to knowledge and correct action is the true antidote to fear and the pathway to rebuilding the child’s security.
