Parenting Perspective
Children learn the concept of environmental stewardship most effectively through visible, hands-on action and consistent habit, not through abstract lectures or complex theories. The initial focus must be on making these small actions joyful, repeatable, and spiritually meaningful.
Hands-On Habits and Spiritual Labelling
Initiate a routine of simple, practical actions that children can easily participate in and observe the results of:Resourcefulness: Directly involve them in watering house plants, reusing empty jars for storage, or carefully turning off lights when leaving a room.Kindness to Creatures: Encourage acts of mercy, such as feeding birds in the garden or ensuring they carry a reusable water bottle to avoid plastic waste.
Crucially, you must explicitly name each act as ‘care for Allah’s Earth.’ This vital spiritual labelling ensures the connection feels sacred and purposeful, not merely an inconvenient chore imposed by parents.
Lifestyle of Stewardship
Children should observe that environmental care is a consistent family lifestyle, not a temporary project or sporadic activity. When they see the whole family routinely reusing items, repairing belongings, and sharing resources instead of constantly buying new ones, they internalise the concept of stewardship.
Avoid overcomplicating the efforts or demanding perfection. Focus intensely on simple, consistent victories. Whenever they complete a conscious, positive act, celebrate their effort with spiritual affirmation: ‘Because you remembered to save that water today, you actively helped Allah’s creation, and that is a wonderful act of worship.’ Small, consistent acts make the big lesson of responsibility deeply believable, naturally turning daily discipline into everyday spiritual practice.
Spiritual Insight
The Islamic vision of environmental responsibility is fundamentally an extension of the prophetic mission: a mission defined by mercy (Rahmah) to all creation. This spiritual lens elevates simple eco-friendly actions into profound expressions of faith and character.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Anbiya (21), Verse 107:
‘And We have not sent you, [O Muhammad], except as a mercy to the worlds…’
This central verse highlights the essence of the message of the Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺmercy to the entire world and all its inhabitants. This spiritual principle provides the ultimate theological justification for all environmental actions. Caring for water resources, showing kindness to animals, preserving the trees, and avoiding pollution are all direct, living forms of mercy (Rahmah). By linking these small actions to the prophetic way, children understand that their eco-friendly habits are not external mandates, but the natural, beautiful outcome of following the best of all creation.
It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 2472, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘While a man was walking on a road, he found a branch of a tree with thorns and removed it; Allah thanked him for that deed and forgave him.’
This beautiful and inspiring hadith provides a direct, powerful illustration of Divine Gratitude and Reward for the simplest environmental act. The action described—the removal of a branch with thorns—is a small act of common decency and public safety. Yet, the reward for it is immense: Allah Almighty ‘thanked him for that deed and forgave him.’ Teaching this to children fills them with immense motivation and hope. It assures them that their conscious effort to undertake small, eco-friendly actions in their home and neighbourhood is recognised and treasured by Allah Almighty, validating their daily responsibility as a path to spiritual purification.
