What helps them see protecting the Earth as an act of faith? 

Parenting Perspective 

For children to fully embrace environmental responsibility, they must transcend the purely practical or scientific arguments and internalise the conviction that protecting the Earth is a direct and cherished act of faith (Ibadah). This is achieved by linking the care of nature directly to their relationship with Allah Almighty. 

Nature as Divine Signs (Ayat) 

The first step is to redefine nature for them. Explain clearly: ‘When we care for the Earth for its animals, its water, and its air we are obeying Allah Almighty, not just saving nature.’ Emphasise that trees, rivers, and wildlife are not merely inert scenery; they are all signs (Ayat) of Allah’s perfection and power. 

Integrate this understanding into their spiritual practice to make the connection tangible: 

• In Du‘a: Include specific, simple phrases in family prayers: ‘Ya Allah, please help us to sincerely care for all that You created and protect what You have given us.’ 

• Active Observation: Invite them to consciously observe the natural world and see how it performs its own unique worship. Point out the birds singing praises, the rain falling in perfect measure, and the winds moving according to divine order. 

When children understand that the entire creation is engaged in constant remembrance of Allah Almighty, they begin to perceive that protecting this creation is an essential part of being a good Muslim—a partner in His glorification. Faith then becomes a powerful spiritual lens through which they view all their actions. 

Spiritual Insight 

The theological foundation of environmental care in Islam rests on the premise that the entirety of existence, from the heavens to the earth, is created by Allah Almighty and dedicated to His glorification. Recognising this inherent sanctity transforms stewardship into a spiritual vocation. 

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Hashr (59), Verse 24: 

‘He is Allah, the Creator, the Inventor, the Fashioner; to Him belong the best names. Whatever is in the heavens and the earth glorifies Him…’ 

This magnificent verse provides a universal link between the Creator and all creation. By asserting that ‘Whatever is in the heavens and the earth glorifies Him,’ the ayah elevates the status of every single environmental element. When children truly realise that the Earth, its oceans, and its life forms are all engaged in perpetual worship of Allah Almighty, the act of protecting these elements is no longer a secular duty. It becomes a deeply profound act of faith and companionship with the ongoing remembrance of the Divine, fostering a deep reverence for nature’s spiritual role. 

It is recorded in Sunan Nisai, Hadith 736, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 

‘The Earth has been made for me a place of prostration and a means of purification.’ 

This foundational hadith establishes the Earth’s sacred and instrumental role in the performance of the most fundamental act of worship: prayer (Salah). By declaring the Earth a ‘place of prostration’ (Masjid) and a ‘means of purification’ (Tayammum), the Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ imparts a sense of profound sanctity and reverence to the very ground we walk upon. Caring for the Earth is therefore not external to one’s spiritual life; it is necessary for it. This insight teaches children that preserving the environment directly sustains their own spiritual practice, transforming every mindful environmental action into an act of true devotion and a sign of thankfulness for the privilege of Salah.
