How do I encourage my daughter to enjoy maths and science?

Parenting Perspective

Emphasise that Maths and Science are for Everyone

Encouraging your daughter to enjoy maths and science begins with fostering an environment where these subjects are seen as fun, interesting, and valuable. You can start by emphasising that these subjects are for everyone, regardless of gender. You might say, ‘Maths and science are not just for boys, they are for anyone who is curious and loves to learn. You have the ability to excel in these subjects just like anyone else.’

Make Learning Interactive and Engaging

It is helpful to make learning these subjects interactive and engaging. You can use everyday examples to show how maths and science apply to real life. For example, ‘When we bake, we use maths to measure the ingredients, and we use science to understand how the heat helps the cake to rise.’ This helps your daughter to see how these subjects are a part of the world around her and not just abstract concepts.

Encourage Curiosity

Encourage her curiosity by exploring science experiments or by engaging in maths games together. There are plenty of fun activities, apps, and videos that are designed to make these subjects enjoyable and accessible. It is important to praise her effort and her curiosity, even when she makes mistakes, as this reinforces that learning is a process of discovery.

Introduce Female Role Models

You can also introduce her to female role models in science and maths, such as Marie Curie or Ada Lovelace. ‘Look at these amazing women in science who made huge discoveries! They show us that anyone, no matter their gender, can make a big impact in the world of science and maths.’ This will inspire her and help her to see that girls can excel in these fields.

Spiritual Insight

In Islam, the pursuit of knowledge is highly valued for both men and women. Allah Almighty says in the noble Quran at Surah Al Alaq (96), Verses 1-5:

‘Read in the name of your Sustainer, Who has created you. Created mankind from a coagulated germ cell. Read, and your Sustainer is the Most Magnanimous. The One who taught through the pen (of Light, which wrote all of the destiny of creation). Taught mankind all that which he does not know.’

These verses emphasise that seeking knowledge is a noble endeavour for everyone, regardless of gender, and that it is a part of fulfilling our purpose in life.

The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also emphasised the importance of seeking knowledge. It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 3587, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated:

‘The best of you are those who are the best to their families.’

This Hadith highlights the value of learning and of applying knowledge in all areas of life. By encouraging your daughter to enjoy maths and science, you are helping her to engage with the Islamic values of education, curiosity, and the pursuit of excellence.
