Parenting Perspective
Explain it in Simple Terms
Explaining peer pressure to a child requires clarity and empathy, as children may not always understand the concept fully. You can start by discussing what peer pressure is in simple terms. You could explain that it happens when friends or classmates try to convince someone to do something they might not want to do. For example, ‘Sometimes, friends may encourage you to do something just because everyone else is doing it, even if you feel uncomfortable or know it is wrong.’ This explanation helps your child to understand that peer pressure is not always a positive influence.
Teach Them It is Okay to Say No
It is also important to teach your child that it is okay to say no, even if their friends are insisting. Encourage them to trust their own instincts and values. You might say, ‘If you do not feel comfortable doing something, it is okay to say no. True friends will respect your decisions and not make you do things that are not right for you.’ Help your child to build confidence in their ability to stand up for themselves in these situations, teaching them that their worth is not dependent on what others think.
Reinforce Through Role-Play
To reinforce this, you can role-play different situations with your child where they might face peer pressure. Practising responses like, ‘I do not want to do that,’ or ‘That is not something I believe in,’ gives your child the tools to handle these moments when they encounter them in real life. Praising your child when they stand firm in their beliefs, even in the face of peer pressure, will encourage them to continue making good choices.
Spiritual Insight
In Islam, the concept of standing up for what is right, even in the face of pressure, is highly emphasised. Allah Almighty reminds us in the noble Quran at Surah Al Tawbah (9), Verse 119:
‘O you who are Believers, seek piety from Allah (Almighty) and (always) be in the company of the truthful (people).’
This verse highlights the importance of aligning ourselves with the truth, even when it is difficult, and choosing companions who help us to stay on the right path.
The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also taught the importance of maintaining integrity, even when others try to lead us astray. It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 6594. that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Truthfulness leads to righteousness, and righteousness leads to Paradise.’
This Hadith serves as a reminder that, even under pressure, we must remain true to our values and beliefs. By teaching your child how to navigate peer pressure, you are helping them to align their actions with the Islamic principles of truthfulness and integrity.
