How can I teach my child sportsmanship and fairness in competitions?

Parenting Perspective

Emphasise Effort Over Victory

Teaching your child about sportsmanship and fairness in competitions involves emphasising the importance of respecting others, playing by the rules, and valuing effort over victory. You can start by explaining that in Islam, fairness and respect for others are integral to having a good character. You might say, ‘Winning is not the most important thing in a competition. What matters is how you play the game, with respect for others and with a fair attitude.’

Be Gracious in Both Victory and Defeat

Encourage your child to focus on doing their best, rather than solely on the outcome. You can teach them that success is measured not just by winning, but by how they handle both victory and defeat. ‘It is great to win, but how you act when you lose is just as important. If you lose, be gracious and learn from the experience. If you win, be humble and show respect to your opponent.’

Practice and Praise

Role-playing different situations can also help your child to understand how to act with fairness and respect in competitive settings. For example, ‘If you win, you should congratulate your opponent for playing well, and if you lose, you should congratulate the winner and learn from your experience.’ Praise your child when they demonstrate good sportsmanship and fairness, as this reinforces that good character is more important than the competition itself.

Spiritual Insight

In Islam, fairness, respect, and humility are core principles, especially in competitive situations. Allah Almighty says in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 286:

‘Allah (Almighty) does not place any burden on any human being except that which is within his capacity….’

This verse teaches us that we should compete fairly and understand our own limits, while also respecting the limits and the strengths of others.

The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also emphasised the importance of sportsmanship and fair competition. It is recorded in Sunan Abi Dawood, Hadith 3252, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated:

‘Speak the truth, even if it is bitter.’

This Hadith teaches us that integrity and honesty are essential, even in competitive situations. By teaching your child the value of fairness and sportsmanship, you are helping them to develop the qualities of respect, humility, and integrity that are essential in all aspects of life, in line with Islamic teachings.
