How do I help my son feel confident in creative subjects?
Parenting Perspective
Praise Effort, Not Perfection
Helping your son to feel confident in creative subjects involves creating an environment that values creativity and self-expression. You can start by praising his efforts in artistic or creative activities, regardless of the outcome. For example, ‘I love how you have used so many colours in your drawing! Creativity is about expressing yourself, not just about making things perfect.’ This reinforces the idea that creativity is a skill to be developed, not something that requires perfection from the start.
Encourage Exploration
Encourage your son to explore different forms of creative expression, whether it is drawing, music, writing, or building. You can show him that there are no limits to creativity and that it is a valuable way to think and to solve problems. ‘There is no right or wrong in creativity. Let us try different things and see what you enjoy the most.’
Introduce Male Role Models
Provide opportunities for him to learn from others who excel in creative fields. You can introduce him to male role models, whether from the arts, design, or technology, who have used their talents in meaningful ways. ‘Did you know that some of the greatest artists, inventors, and designers were men who started out just like you? Creativity can lead to so many amazing opportunities.’
Creativity is a Strength
It is also important to let your son know that creativity is not a ‘soft’ or ‘feminine’ trait, but a powerful skill that both boys and girls can excel in. ‘Being creative is something that everyone can enjoy. It is a strength that can help you in many areas of life, not just in art.’
Spiritual Insight
In Islam, creativity and innovation are highly valued, as they contribute to the betterment of society and are a reflection of Allah’s creation. Allah Almighty says in the noble Quran at Surah Al Rahman (55), Verse 1-2:
‘The Most Beneficent (Allah Almighty). Who taught (His beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ) the (noble) Quran.’
These verses remind us that creativity, as an expression of the divine gift of intellect, is a form of worship and a reflection on the beauty and complexity of Allah’s creation.
The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also valued creativity and the use of one’s abilities in productive ways. It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 3587, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated:
‘The best of you are those who are the best to their families.’
This Hadith encourages us to embrace all forms of creativity, whether they are artistic, intellectual, or physical, as long as they align with good character and benefit others. By helping your son to feel confident in creative subjects, you are nurturing his talents and encouraging him to use them in the service of his community and his faith.
