How can I get siblings to enjoy reading together?
Parenting Perspective
Create a Warm and Playful Habit
Encouraging siblings to read together can turn story time into a warm family habit that strengthens their language skills and their bond with each other. Start by choosing books that appeal to both children’s ages and interests. For younger siblings, simple picture books with repetitive phrases are best, while older ones might enjoy taking the lead by reading aloud or explaining parts of the story. Praising the older child for helping their sibling helps to build their confidence as a mini storyteller.
Keep the atmosphere calm and unpressured; do not force a reluctant child to read, but gently invite them to join in. Shared reading works best in short bursts, like before bedtime or during a quiet afternoon. You can also add small activities, such as acting out scenes, drawing characters, or using soft toys as story props. These moments make reading feel like play rather than a chore. Over time, the younger child learns new words through listening and repetition, while the older one builds fluency and patience by guiding the story.
Spiritual Insight
Building Closeness and Mercy
In Islam, strong sibling ties are part of a healthy family and a blessing that brings Barakah when they are nurtured with kindness and shared learning. Allah Almighty reminds us of the beauty of unity and love within families. Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Hujuraat (49), Verse 10:
‘Indeed, the believers are brothers (to each other); so, make peace with your brothers; and seek piety from Allah (Almighty) so that you may receive His Mercy.’
This verse encourages us to build closeness and help each other to grow, which includes helping one another to learn.
Keep it Easy and Joyful
The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ showed gentle patience with young ones and encouraged an atmosphere of learning within the family. It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 6125, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Make things easy and do not make things difficult.’
Reading together should always feel easy and joyful, not like a lesson or a competition. Praise both siblings for trying, no matter how small their effort. When an older child helps their brother or sister with words or ideas, remind them that they are following the Sunnah of teaching good knowledge. This gentle teamwork plants seeds of kindness, confidence, and respect for learning in both of their hearts.
