How can I help my child ask for help if they do not understand?

Parenting Perspective

Asking for Help is a Strength

Many children feel shy or embarrassed to ask for help when they do not understand something, especially if they are still learning a new language. You can start by explaining that asking for help is not a weakness but is a smart, brave thing to do. Use simple examples they can relate to: ‘If you do not know what a word means in class, it is better to ask the teacher than to remain confused.’

Practise short phrases they can use, like, ‘Can you say that again, please?’ or ‘I do not understand. Can you help me?’ You can role-play these situations at home, so your child feels more confident using the words when they are needed. Praise their efforts to speak up, even if they hesitate at first. Remind them that everyone, even grown-ups, needs help sometimes. If they feel nervous, encourage them to take a deep breath and remember that most people are kind and willing to explain things again. Over time, your calm support will teach your child that asking questions is part of learning and is nothing to feel shy about.

Spiritual Insight

A Sign of a Sincere Heart

Islam encourages us to seek knowledge with humility and courage. Allah Almighty shows us through the noble Quran that asking questions is a sign of a sincere heart. Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Nahal (16), Verse 43:

‘…So (always) question the people of realisation, if you find yourselves unaware of (anything).’

This gentle command reminds us that seeking help is not something to hide; it brings clarity and growth.

Make it Easy

The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ created an environment where people, young and old, felt safe to ask questions without fear of being mocked. It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 6125, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘Make things easy and do not make things difficult.’

When you teach your child to ask for help kindly and confidently, you are following this Sunnah. Make Dua with your child that Allah Almighty gives them the courage to speak up and grants them understanding. Remind them that every time they ask a question with sincerity, they open the door to more knowledge and the mercy of Allah Almighty.
