Gentle Encouragement and Playful Practice 

When children retell stories in their own words, they practise using new vocabulary, building their memory, and expressing ideas with confidence. Start by choosing short, simple stories with clear characters and actions. After reading together, ask gentle, open-ended questions like, ‘What happened first?’ or ‘How did the story end?’ Instead of correcting every detail, praise their effort and show a real interest in how they remember the events. 

If your child struggles, you can use props like toys or drawings to help them act out scenes; this makes retelling feel like play rather than a test. With younger children, repeating favourite stories builds their confidence to try new words. For older children, you can ask them to share the story with a sibling, a grandparent, or even at bedtime. Keep your tone warm and relaxed so they feel safe to make mistakes and try again. The more your child feels trusted, the braver they will be in telling stories in their own unique voice. 

Spiritual Insight 

A Way to Encourage Reflection 

Islam beautifully values the art of passing down stories because it keeps wisdom alive from one heart to another. The noble Quran itself is full of meaningful stories that invite reflection and retelling. Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Aa’raaf (7), Verse 176: 

‘….So relate to them these narration so that they may ponder (on their state of affairs).’ 

This verse shows us that retelling is not just about repeating words; it is about encouraging thinking, understanding, and sharing lessons with others. 

The Prophetic Example 

The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was known for retelling stories and examples in a way that matched the listener’s level of understanding. It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2055a, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ: 

‘would share stories about the people before us to help hearts stay awake and minds reflect.’ 

Encouraging your child to retell stories, whether they get all the details right or not, helps them to find their own connection to words and their meaning. Remind your child that every story can be a way to remember Allah Almighty’s signs and to share good reminders with others. Praise them for trying, even if their version is simple; you are teaching them that words can spread kindness, truth, and faith.
