What Words Link Sunnah Habits to Love for the Prophet ﷺ?

Parenting Perspective

Children respond far more deeply when their actions are tied to someone they truly admire. At the heart of their curiosity is the natural desire to connect and belong, particularly to role models they respect. Recognizing this emotional core allows parents to frame routines not as rigid rules, but as expressions of profound love and sincere emulation. The Devotion Script for parents is: ‘We follow these habits because the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ loved to do them, and we love him too,’ which validates the child’s feelings while giving purpose to everyday actions. Stories and gentle explanations are essential; children understand better when they grasp the reasoning behind habits rather than being instructed mechanically.

Connect Habits to Admiration

Children naturally imitate those they admire, so explicitly connecting routines to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ fosters deep intrinsic motivation. Highlighting the wisdom and care in his actions helps them see habits as meaningful. The Purposeful Love Script is: ‘The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ cared for cleanliness because he loved Allah Almighty and wanted to be healthy; we can show love the same way,’ which frames hygiene and other Sunnah acts as tangible expressions of devotion. Using consistent, loving language reinforces this connection, making habits feel like a privilege rather than a chore.

Turn Actions into Inspiring Stories

Narratives firmly anchor learning in the child’s memory. Parents should describe a short, vivid scene: the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ performing ablution carefully, smiling while washing his hands, or brushing his teeth with the miswak before Salah (prayer). Children remember scenes far more than abstract rules. The Imitation Script is: ‘We are doing this just like he ﷺ did, step by step,’ which transforms the routine into an exciting, respectful imitation. As a Micro-Action, choose one habit today, such as washing hands before eating, and make it a shared, mindful activity while briefly mentioning the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ’s beautiful example. Pairing action with narrative strengthens engagement and builds a spiritual connection that motivates consistent practice.

Spiritual Insight

Islam actively encourages love for the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ through following his noble example, which naturally extends to his preferred habits and daily routines. Practising Sunnah is not only about correctness but about expressing devotion, admiration, and alignment with his guidance. Children can easily understand that each small act is a way to draw closer to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ’s way of life.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Ahzab (33), Verse 21:

‘Indeed in the Messenger of Allah you have a good example to follow for him who hopes in Allah and the Last Day and remembers Allah often...’

This verse reminds parents and children alike that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ’s actions are the ultimate exemplary standard. It is not imitation for imitation’s sake, but a conscious choice rooted in love and reverence. Parents can explain that when a child follows simple Sunnah routines, it beautifully reflects their admiration and genuine connection to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 209, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘Whoever revives one of my Sunnah practices which has been abandoned after my death, he will have a reward like that of the one who acted upon it, without diminishing their reward in any way.’

This Hadith powerfully emphasises the immense spiritual value of following the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ’s practices. The Spiritual Reward Script is: ‘By doing this habit, you are loving the Prophet ﷺ and sharing in his reward,’ which connects everyday actions directly to spiritual growth. Children begin to see that each mindful act washing hands, using miswak, trimming nails is more than mere hygiene; it is a tangible way to honour the Prophet ﷺ, cultivate love, and earn Allah Almighty’s boundless pleasure.
